October 2, 2026: Michigan State began their season (sort of) with an early exhibition game following the student camp out against the University of Incarnate Word from Texas. The Southland conference team was the pick by MSU and they easily handled the Cardinals, 89-59 behind Jesse McCulloch’s 20 points and 5 rebounds.

A lot to like in the game and the progression with McCulloch and Jordan Scott who has added strength and some more poise. The rest of the crew looked good too and we will have to wait until October 20 and the matchup against UConn to get a better feel for what this team might be.

October 1, 2026: Tom Izzo continues to crush it on the recruiting trail year after year as he lands another 4* for next year - Jadyn Jenkins. Jenkins is a 6’10” center who brings a versatile game of defense, offense, and athleticism. He joins fellow 4* point guard Antonio Pemberton for next year’s team.

MSU added a game late this year to its exhibition schedule - Incarnate Word - to follow the Izzone student campout. The game will occur during what is normally Midnight Madness celebration so it will give a better look for Spartans fans what the team is this year. September 30, 2026: It took quite a few years but finally Fred Hoiberg pulled it off. He got Nebraska to the NCAA Tournament and won a game (two actually) before falling to Iowa in the Sweet 16. At the time of his hiring, it felt like Hoiberg was a home run hire but the ‘Huskers struggled for years to be truly competitive in the Big Ten.

Last year was the breakout year where they were one of the last undefeated in college basketball going all the way until January before their first loss. Nebraska had some key personnel losses with graduations so following up last season’s success might not be so easy. However, Pryce Sandfort’s return should help their chances.

September 25, 2026: Michigan State’s 2026-27 schedule leaves plenty of room for a high ceiling—but there won’t be many easy nights along the way. The Spartans face four heavyweights in the nonconference portion, giving them an early opportunity to prove they can compete with the best in the country. And while the rest of the nonconference slate may not carry the same national profile, there aren’t many true cupcakes either, meaning MSU should be tested throughout the opening months of the season.

September 24, 2026: Ohio State has been a very curious program in the Big Ten since Chris Holtman took over. On paper, they seemed to have enough talent but underperformed. They lacked an identity and were largely mediocre with only occasional quick NCAA tournament appearances. Then the school fired Holtman mid season in the midst of another lackluster performance.

However, instead of seeking out other coaches, they quickly hired their interim - Jake Diebler who had some modest success finishing for Holtman. In picking Diebler so quickly they missed out on maybe Dusty May. And although Diebler finally got them to the NCAAs last year, they were again a slightly better than mediocre team and enter this season without their four year starting point guard, Bruce Thornton.

Like a lot of teams, few returning players and a lot of new faces. Will they work? Will the Buckeyes become relevant again like they were in the 2000s? Definitely more questions than answers for

September 21, 2026: What appeared to be a solid yet underwhelming year for the Hawkeyes - .500 Big Ten record, up and down play but a NCAA Tournament bid - turned into so much more as they had probably the most improbable of tournament runs where they knocked off top seed Florida in the second round and made it all the way to the Elite 8 where they lost to Illinois.

Although the regular season was nothing like the postseason, it showed that Iowa may have found its coach as they established an identity that will probably hold up in the league assuming they can land the right players. Ben McCollum is entering his second year and the look of the team is changing as they move from a smaller and less physical lineup to one of length and strength. It will be interesting to see if the Hawkeyes can maintain a level of consistency and maybe contention over the next few years in the Big Ten.

September 18, 2026: This afternoon, Michigan State fans got get an answer on one of the biggest recruiting questions of the 2027 cycle when four-star point guard Antonio Pemberton announces his college commitment. The 6-foot-1 guard from Masters Academy International has emerged as one of the top point guards in the class, and Michigan State is one of eight finalists for his services. Pemberton’s decision comes just days after his visit to East Lansing for MSU’s Grind Week, making the timing particularly intriguing as Tom Izzo looked to add another high-level point guard to the Spartan pipeline. We’ll break down Pemberton’s game, his fit at Michigan State, what his commitment would mean for the 2027 class, and what the Spartans could potentially be building around him in the backcourt.

September 17, 2026: Indiana is a good example of what can go wrong at a blue blood basketball school. Since losing Bobby Knight, Indiana has predominantly been stuck in a purgatory of sorts with only very brief moments of success. Recently, despite spending piles of money, the Hoosiers have struggled to win in any meaningful ways. Partly by hanging on to Mike Woodson for one year too many (looks like they missed the chance to hire Dusty May) and bizarre NIL spends for rosters that don’t work.

Now under new coach Darien DeVries, the Hoosiers are hoping that by changing the composition of his team, the second year coach will start to bring Indiana basketball back to relevancy. Once again, Indiana went heavy in the portal spending and they went after what they desperately lacked last year - size and strength. September 14, 2026: For a school without as much financial support as most in the Big Ten, Wisconsin coach Greg Gard has been very effective finding diamonds in the transfer rough. A lot of Wisconsin’s success over the past few years has been due to finding the right guy passed over by other high major programs and making it work.

Gard has not only worked his magic in the portal but also changed the way Wisconsin plays. They have become a more volatile team by relying heavily on the 3 point shot and increasing their pace of play. But can he continue to strike gold year after year or is Wisconsin due for a down year?
