When you think of cricket in Asia, the last country you might think of is Japan. But my guest this week’s life mission is to help cricket, and especially women’s cricket, thrive in the Land of the Rising Sun.
Shizuka Miyaji came to cricket late, at 19 to be precise, joining her university cricket club, motivated, no doubt, by being rejected from her local baseball team for being a girl.
In 2006 she received her first cap for Japan, starting an international cricket career that would span 17 years, including a two year stint as captain. She retired from international cricket last year, leaving as Japan’s most capped international player, with a legacy that promises to show others that, even in a place like Japan, cricket has its place.
