So, what happens when a remote Alaskan town experiences a diphtheria outbreak and the closest cure is in the continental US? The most epic dog sled adventure. That’s what. Also dark, cold, and weather-y, temperatures incompatible with life, numbers lost to time, Old Woman Shelter, and let’s go dog sled.

Today we return to the misery of Floyd Collins trapped in Sand Cave. It’s starting to seem like this won’t be our happiest story. But we’ll try to keep the energy up with electric boogie on the East Coast, the mayor of Skeets City, the 127 hours game, and a lot of switching sides.

In the cave equivalent of a gold rush, the 1910s gave way to several urgent scrambles to find all the coolest caves in Kentucky. And the urgent scrambles gave way to a pretty big Cave Emergency. This episode includes noted poor farmers, helico-ters, the difference between stalagmites and stalactites, and our first ever two-parter.
