Our God began life with us as a vulnerable God. I’m still not sure it was such a good idea, concentrating all that divinity in one fragile human being that could so easily be taken out. From day one She put Herself at risk of hypothermia in that drafty stable, of possible malnutrition if Mary’s milk supply didn’t get well established given the stress she was under, and of any and all of the childhood diseases that claimed so many infants back then and still do in some parts of the world. And that’s not even counting Herod’s homicidal mania.

Do you remember when you were a kid, and someone gave you a gift you couldn’t quite muster up enthusiasm for, even though you knew you should? Maybe you didn’t like the gift, or you didn’t know what to do with it. Or maybe you just had your heart set on something else. And then, later, after you wrote the obligatory thank you note, you “lost” it, or it “broke,” never to be seen again.

Martin Luther, 16th century church reformer and THE renegade Catholic priest and loudmouthed crank to whom every single one of us can trace our spiritual ancestry, often used to fall into a dark place mentally and spiritually. It is a worthy reminder that if even Martin Luther, on whose shoulders all of Protestant Christianity rests, could have doubts and fears and depressions, then it’s only natural that we would too.
