When Cheryl Strayed walked into the woods at 26 years old, she went because there were no other ways open to her. She doesn't say God made her do it. In fact, she doesn't mention God once, anywhere in her book, though God's fingerprints are all over her story.

The scripture reading this morning comes from the Book of Job, chapter 12, verses 7-10.  In the Book of Job, Job is a man who is going through a really hard time – a lot of bad things have happened to him.  His friends all show up and tell him that he must have done something really terrible to be so cursed.  But Job knows deep down that what his friends think is wisdom, is too simple.  Job scoffs at their human wisdom and lifts up the Wisdom of all Creation.  All life knows that God is in control, says Job, but only people assume that they can speak for God about why bad things happen.  Let us now hear Job’s words; the Word of God:
