Who was Jesus of Nazareth? Who is Jesus Christ? Outside of the Bible there are only two very brief references to Jesus found in ancient documents of that time. Over the years, historians, archeologists, Bible scholars have tried their best to uncover the factual truth about his life on Earth.

It’s great to be here again. I’ve done a lot of guest preaching since my retirement, and I want you to know that First Church Somerville stands out. It’s a pleasure to have been with you these two weeks. You have a wonderful staff. Nothing seems to faze Thom—he’s not a prima donna but truly a part of the ministry team. Your church administrator, Jamie, is patient and competent, Ian was very helpful in bringing me on board. And you are just a fine congregation. You extend a warm welcome and are clearly a church with a mission. It is especially a privilege to be sharing worship with Molly today. She is a treasure, as you know—full of passion and smarts. Watch out for when she comes back full time. She’s bound to be even more her authentic, brilliant self.

It’s great to be back in Somerville again. You were very welcoming and receptive when I preached here last August. I’ve followed Rev. Molly’s blog so I know that you are being what a church should be in a crisis. Supporting her and her family spiritually and practically, and rising to your challenges. With your exceptional staff and lay leaders and Ian as pastor, you continue to be a witness in the community. I commend you.

Preamble Our text for the morning comes from the book of Ecclesiastes. It is a strange and small book, just about ten pages long in my Bible, sandwiched between the book of Proverbs and the Book of the prophet Isaiah, two giant texts of the Old Testament. It is easy to miss. You may not recognize the name of the book, but you probably have heard the following verses spoken before, perhaps at a funeral or memorial service.
