The first computer to enter Nepal before 53 years

वि.सं. २०२८ मा नेपालमा पहिलो पटक भारतबाट भाडामा ल्याइएको IBM 1401 कम्प्युटर जनगणनाको डेटा प्रशोधनका लागि प्रयोग गरियो। पूर्व प्रमुख निर्वाचन आयुक्त नीलकण्ठ उप्रेती त्यस समयमा तथ्याङ्क विभागमा डेटा अपरेटर थिए। पन्च्ड कार्डमार्फत कम्प्युटरमा सूचना प्रविष्टि हुन्थ्यो र यसको स्टोरेज क्षमता १६KB मात्र थियो। उच्च खर्च, विद्युत् समस्या, र धैर्य आवश्यक भए पनि कम्प्युटरले जनगणना १८ महिनामा सकायो। पछि कम्प्युटर सिंहदरबार सारियो र "राष्ट्रिय कम्प्युटर केन्द्र" स्थापना गरियो। २०४२ मा मतदाता नामावली राख्न नेपाली फन्ट समेत विकास गरियो।
In 1971 (B.S. 2028), Nepal rented its first computer, the IBM 1401, from India for census data processing. Nilkantha Upreti, then a young data operator at the Central Bureau of Statistics, was among the first to learn to operate it. The computer used punch cards and had just 16KB of memory. Despite challenges like high costs, frequent power cuts, and technical complexity, it helped complete the census in 18 months. Later, it was moved to Singha Durbar and led to the formation of the National Computer Center. By 1985, Nepal had developed its first Nepali font for voter registration.
