In 1971 (B.S. 2028), Nepal rented its first computer, the IBM 1401, from India for census data processing. Nilkantha Upreti, then a young data operator at the Central Bureau of Statistics, was among the first to learn to operate it. The computer used punch cards and had just 16KB of memory. Despite challenges like high costs, frequent power cuts, and technical complexity, it helped complete the census in 18 months. Later, it was moved to Singha Durbar and led to the formation of the National Computer Center. By 1985, Nepal had developed its first Nepali font for voter registration.

AI-Powered Nepali Podcast via Google NotebookLM: Now Available!

With the latest update from Google, you can now listen to your study or research materials as a podcast in Nepali using NotebookLM's new feature, Audio Overviews. This tool summarizes key topics from your uploaded sources and presents them as a conversation between two AI hosts — not based on opinions, but directly grounded in the material you provide.

Previously available only in English, Audio Overviews has now expanded to over 50 languages, including Nepali, Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese, and French.

To listen in Nepali:

• Go to Settings in the top-right corner of NotebookLM.

• Select “Output Language” and choose Nepali.

• Open your notebook, navigate the Studio panel on the right, and click Generate under Audio Overview.

• Optionally, add a 500-character steering prompt to focus the conversation on a specific topic.

Please note:

• Non-English language support is still in beta so that outputs may vary in quality.

• Google is working to improve this feature based on user feedback.

• This AI-generated audio might occasionally include inaccuracies and should be reviewed accordingly.

Audio Overviews is now available in over 200 countries and includes options to interact with the AI hosts (interactive mode currently in English only). You can share your audio via public links, share full notebooks, or download the audio directly. This feature is currently limited to standard Google accounts — it is not available for Enterprise or EDU accounts.
