David O. Strickland's darkly comic novel is set during Egress Recap - the return of American POWs from Vietnam's "Hanoi Hilton" in 1973. Like Kurt Vonnegut's classic Slaughterhouse-Five, The First Man off the Plane features POWs bombed by their own planes. Like Joseph Heller's satirical Catch-22, it depicts the insanity of war...as well as Vietnamese, the Home Front, and the Nixon Administration - including President Nixon, Kissinger, Ehrlichman, Haldeman, Dean, General Haig, and Hugh Hefner's Playmates...among others.
Members Reviews:
A first class satire
If you are among the rare breed who admire good satire, you must read David Strickland's First Man Off the plane. It surely is a candidate for one of the best satires ever written. It contains literary allusions that will keep you reading and re-reading, then want to share with your friends. They will thank you.
Great Ride
The First Man off the Plane is a mind bender. If you were born after 1971 read this book to help gain an understanding of todayâs current events dealing with N. Korea.
When reading this book I would at times burst out laughing and be shaking my head in disgust the next. This book shows the ugly side of war from multiple standpoints. I like the times the reader spends in the White House for the shenanigans.
A great read and a good listen.
