Supporting our preservice teachers is fundamental to a sustainable education system. Dr Sandy Nicoll has worked with thousands of preservice teachers and through the New Brew podcast is creating a network of educators that support each other's practice.
Hosted by Ben Newsome from Fizzics Education
About Dr Sandy Nicoll
Dr Sandy Nicoll's PhD was conferred in 2019 on the topic: How do primary preservice teachers learn to engage students in learning during professional experience?
After teaching in Higher Education since 2007, and a classroom teacher for 3 decades Dr Sandy estimates she has walked alongside over 15,000 pre-service teachers as a tutor and lecturer. She loves the idea of engaging others so we can empower them to create and elevate. These experiences inspired her in 2021 to become the maker for The New Brew Podcast with curators Hema, Jase, Jarryd, Kyle, Rowan and Tash.

What if Marie Curie could tell her story?
As a digital theater performance, HUMANITY NEEDS DREAMERS: A VISIT WITH MARIE CURIE (40 mins) invites audiences to take part in her discoveries as she recollects her quest to isolate two elements — polonium and radium. From her childhood in Poland to groundbreaking research in France, Marie Curie shares the struggles, failures and triumphs behind her scientific achievements and remarkable collaboration with companion scientist & husband Pierre Curie.
Masterfully portrayed by living history scholar & playwright Storysmith® Susan Marie Frontczak, HUMANITY NEEDS DREAMERS is the cinematic version of her acclaimed one-woman show. This unique format breaks the digital fourth wall between live theater and film, scholar and performer, past and present.
HUMANITY NEEDS DREAMERS is produced by STEM on Stage a digital humanities lab in collaboration with the Princeton Center for Complex Materials STEM outreach programs.
Hosted by Ben Newsome from Fizzics Education

Connecting scientific theory with imagination is what Imaginaturalists is all about! We chat with founder Gillian Hewiit to learn how students can create scientifically accurate drawings of the world around them as well and take this to another level when pondering what might live on other worlds.
Hosted by Ben Newsome from Fizzics Education
More about Gillian Hewitt
As founder of Imaginaturalists, Gillian wishes to inspire a love of science in children by engaging them with creative expression and experiential learning.
Gillian graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Science (Honours). She has worked as a research assistant in several marine biology laboratories at the Universities of Sydney, Murdoch, and Western Australia until she was lucky enough to travel to Casey Station, Antarctica with the Australian Antarctic Division's Human Impacts Team as a Research Assistant.
She then completed an Honours thesis " Reproduction and the Evolution of Development in Abatus sp., Marsupiate Echinoids Endemic to Antarctica.
After moving to Maitland, NSW she leapt at the opportunity to combine her two passions, science, and art. She undertook a Bachelor of Natural History Illustration at the University of Newcastle, graduating in 2018, with Distinction and being awarded a Faculty Medal for The Faculty of Education and Arts in 2018.
She has been commissioned to undertake public artworks around Maitland, including a 55m long Australian birds’ mural at the Maitland City Library. Her illustrations have been published in botanical books and scientific papers and theses.
Gillian believes art is the language of science! Without the visual communication provided by illustrations and graphics, scientific concepts are often very complex to understand. Through Imaginaturalists she encourages children to utilise their powers of observation and gives them the skills to express these through fun and creative means. She inspires her students to stop, slow down and look at the world around them. Imaginaturalists introduces them to the building blocks of scientific enquiry with fun, creative, practical cross-curricular learning that continues to increase their confidence in all aspects of their education.

Find out about ASBX, the world’s biggest, most inclusive and forward-thinking gathering of leaders, CEOs, entrepreneurs, policymakers, scientists, researchers, astronauts, academics across the world of space biology and health technologies. We speak with Dr Joshua Chou who is one of the organizers from the University of Technology Sydney.
Hosted by Ben Newsome from Fizzics Education
More about ASBX
The Australian Space Biology Symposium (ASBS) was established in 2019 with the vision of bringing together the international research and industry community in order to bridge the gap between basic science and technology for humans in space. In turn, these technologies can be applied here on Earth. This year, the Australian Space Biology x Health Summit (ASBX) hopes to inspire our audience yet again to "think further" about the big questions of humanity and space. What exactly is the next big discovery waiting in space biology? Similarly in 2020, the first Australian Space Health Symposium (ASHS) embraced the theme of “how to thrive, not just survive”. These two paths have converged in ASBX 2021.

More about Dr Joshua Chou
One of Australia’s leading exponents of space biology and health, Dr Joshua Chou is passionate about finding new ways to deal with debilitating diseases by applying engineering principles to unanswered biological questions. A senior lecturer and Group Leader in the School of Biomedical Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering & IT (FEIT) at UTS, Joshua’s innovative research focuses on developing different biological tools to understand cellular and disease mechanotransduction. He is a Charlie Teo Fellow, with a two-year grant to use space biology to disable some of the hardest cancers to fight, including brain cancer.
Joshua was awarded the Australia Space Award Researcher of the Year in 2020 and was a 2021 finalist for the UTS Chancellor’s Medal for Research Excellence for his work leveraging the unique properties of microgravity in space to understand physical properties of the living cell and their impact in health and disease. Joshua also is the driving force behind the Chou Collective, a multidisciplinary and highly skilled team of students from FEIT and the Faculty of Science at UTS. The Collective works at the interface of biology, tissue engineering, biomedical engineering and materials science to develop novel solutions in the treatment and understanding of diseases.
