At the beginning of the nationwide lockdown, Chris Taylor lost his job handling the social media of a local tourism marketing organization.

It was very hard to get by without an income but he knew he had to do something to pay the rent and keep food on the table.

And thus 'The Cape Winelands' was born - a small destination marketing organization which represents the Cape Winelands region of South Africa.

They have reached almost 12,000 followers in less than 6 months and have now acquired the website www.thecapewinelands.com. 

Their mission is to help promote businesses and boost tourism sustainably.

It was announced this week that a vaccine jointly developed by Pfizer and BioNTech was 90% effective in preventing COVID-19 infections in ongoing Phase 3 trials.

According to preliminary findings, protection in patients was achieved seven days after the second of two doses, and 28 days after the first.

This appears to be the first of many vaccines that is currently in the pipeline.

South Africa was also involved in the study for the vaccine which is another feather in our hats.

There might be one problem for the country though thanks to Eskom – the vaccine needs to be stored at -70 degrees and with power outages that could be a problem.

Carl spoke to the CEO and President of the South African Research Council, Dr Glenda Grey to find out more about the vaccine.

The American people have spoken – and finally, late on Saturday, it was announced that Joe Biden was elected as the 46th President of the US.

It hasn’t been smooth sailing since then though – with President Donald Trump not having conceded yet.

Trump has also made good on his threat to take the results to court – having lost 10 cases so far.

Gourmet Lab is a small food retailer that was born out during the pandemic. 

Owner Shaun Scrooby used to have a safari business but this was put on hold so he started delivering food.

Gourmet Lab retails food obtained straight from farms or small scale suppliers.

Gourmet Lab produces aioli, roasted peppers in olive oil, tomate frito, gazpacho, olive oil butter and even do home deliveries of cooked paellas. 

They deliver daily in the Table View, Blouberg, Milnerton, Sunningdale area and then one day in Southern Suburbs and the city.

Carl Wastie is not in a happy place and that’s because last week the department of agriculture, land reform and rural development gazetted amended regulations with new requirements for what qualifies as coffee.

Some of the regulations include:

To earn the description "mixed coffee" or "coffee mixture", for instance, a product will have to be 75% ground coffee, while any "coffee and chicory mixture" must be at least half coffee.

To qualify for the "chicory and coffee mixture" label, a drink must be at least 50% chicory.

Now here is the thing – Ricoffy is only 32.5% chicory and does not contain enough chicory or ground coffee to fit into any of the product categories.

Carl decided to go to the source and get clarity on what the future holds for Ricoffy as a brand.

He spoke to Saint-Francis Tohlang, Corporate Communications and Public Affairs Director at Nestlé (East and Southern Africa Region).
