The Flip Side With Richie Flip - A podcast about stuff

I’ve finished the first read-through of One Long Drive Home, my second novel. In this episode, I talk about how the story began, introduce Rob and Tori, and share what stood out as I read the full manuscript for the first time.  It's fun finding a way to be keep myself busy being 50+.

Music is part of the story, too. I pick up the guitar to talk about the songs Rob plays for Charlotte on the night he meets Tori, and play a few bars along the way.

The manuscript is currently 35 chapters and roughly 61,200 words. I’m giving it a week before the next read so I can come back with fresh eyes. Thanks for following along.

Bruce Springsteen may be the biggest name to emerge from the Jersey Shore music scene — but the Jersey Shore Sound didn't begin with Bruce. He came out of a musical community that was already thriving.

In this episode, we take a deep dive into the history of the Jersey Shore Sound — from the R&B, soul, blues and rock & roll roots of Asbury Park to the Upstage Club, the Stone Pony and the generations of musicians who made the Shore their musical home.

We'll explore the connections between Bruce Springsteen, Southside Johnny, Steven Van Zandt, Clarence Clemons, David Sancious, Danny Federici, Garry Tallent, Vini Lopez, Bill Chinnock, Bobby Bandiera and many others.

We'll also look at the legendary Jersey Shore club scene, Bruce's bar-band sit-ins, the extended musical family that includes Gary U.S. Bonds and Joe Grushecky, and even where artists like Graham Parker, Elvis Costello and Bon Jovi fit into the story.

Because the Jersey Shore Sound isn't simply a genre.

It's the story of a musical community that helped create Bruce Springsteen.

If you enjoy music history, classic rock, Asbury Park, the Stone Pony and the stories behind the musicians we grew up listening to, this one's for you.

In this video, I’m getting real about what it looks like to be 50+ and still trying to juggle a massive list of passion projects. Between managing daily responsibilities, keeping up with my music, and chasing new creative goals, the clock is my biggest adversary.

I’m talking today about:

The Midlife Hustle: How I manage the day-to-day grind when energy levels aren't what they used to be.

The Power of Pushing Through: Why I keep going even when I’m exhausted.

My Author Journey: A quick look back at my first book and how the experience of getting that published is fueling my current progress on my next project.

If you’ve ever felt like you have more ideas than hours in the day, this one’s for you. Let’s talk about how to keep the creative fire burning without burning out.

I can't thank you enough for coming along on this journey.  There is no end gam here.  As the late, great Neil Peart once penned, "The point of the journey is not to arrive".  That's the plan.  We just keep going until the wheels fall off.

I have dipped my toe in the AI pool recently, specifically using Google Gemini.  This should be interesting.

Almost ten years ago I began the journey of writing and self-publishing my first book.  Never thought I would see it finished.  My Uncle Jack was the inspiration and the story took off from there.  Names and places have been changed to protect those name and places.
