  • TFPP 032: How co-living suits humanity with Jay Standish
Jay Standish is the co-founder of OpenDoor.io, an organisation that is creating collaborative, shared living spaces in the San Francisco Bay area. If you have ever thought how fun and rewarding it would be to live in community, be part of a tribe, enjoy the benefits of village-like life, then listen in for inspiration and practical tips on how to set up your own community!
I have always been fascinated by how community relates to human potential. Human’s living with a village vibe just makes sense on every level.
I remember watching a documentary called Happy   which traced how humans find happiness in different cultures. My key takeaway was that community equated to shared experiences and the relief of burdens that can be overwhelming when faced in isolation. Those living in communities with support networks (emotional as well as practical, like childcare, shared cooking), experienced greater wellbeing and happiness.

When it comes to living a life that flows, the equation is simple: remove what obstacles there are to flow. These obstacles are the burdens we face in life, like juggling the need to work, with the need to have child-care. Or balancing out how we can live in a sustainable and responsible way, with the need to go to supermarkets to get food supply. It comes down to time and space. How much space do we have in our lives and in our minds to live authentically? How much time do we have to invest in living the way we really want to live?
Co-living- it really could be the answer. I’m feeling pretty excited about the idea. As long as I get “Jiro-time” regularly, I can not see any reason why living with people and sharing life responsibilities and experiences can be anything less than optimal living.
    What do you think?
Co-living wisdom bombs that are dropped

    * How to deal with the “home economics”, the day to day stuff, like cleaning
    * The recent invention of the nuclear family and isolated living
    * The spiritual, psychological, emotional benefits of shared living (economical also)

  • TFPP 031: Professor Michael Graziano- A New theory of Consciousness
Dr. Michael Graziano is a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Princeton university, and the author of several books on consciousness and countless peer reviewed articles. He is also a composer, a novelist and a ventriloquist.
Few neuroscientists have so boldly dived into the topic of spirituality. He is the author of God Soul Mind Brain: A Neuroscientist’s Reflections on the Spirit World.
In his latest book, Consciousness & the Social Brain Graziano presents an audacious theory on consciousness. This theory has attracted a fair amount of controversy, and in this podcast Michael lays it out simply, and explains how using a puppet monkey named Kevin, and the ability to ventriloquise, helps him understand and explain this theory. Watch him do this here.
I really enjoyed this free-flowing conversation that spans flow states, creativity, non-optimal mind states, bystander effect, and of course puppetry. Stick around until the end, as Michael provides a very interesting strategy for tapping into peak creative states.

    * Check out some of his articles here, including ones on phantom limbs, and why music is a religious experience.
    * Read about the psychology of hunger here

  • TFPP 030: Mason Taylor- Shifting the paradigm of health to a dialogue with self

Mason Taylor is one of my inspirations. He is spreading a message of health, but in an entirely different way. I dig it. The drivel pouring out of the mainstream media when it comes to health is leading to greater dis-connect with ourselves and each other.  It perpetuates the damaging illusion that our health and happiness can be sourced by external means.
Mason is playing an important role for humanity in creating a new vision for health, one that requires us to gain sovereignty of our minds and bodies. I support him whole-heartedly.
Just like my message on flow states, Mason talks about awakening our innate awareness, so we connect with what is already within us. We can therefore cease the endless search for health, comfort, gratification, chiselled abs, a rock hard ass, validation from others and all the other externally derived sources of so called happiness and health… and begin the journey of seeing health as a re-connection with our intuition, our guiding voice.
“The way I approach health is very feeling based”, he begins. “We all want energy & vitality, but where does that come from, where is that perception coming from, what is that want, what is that desire?”
Mason argues persuasively how this energy and vitality is already within us. “Allow these elements to be the fertilizer to what is already within you.”
Join Mason and a wonderful group on a Health Activation Retreat
Please listen into this podcast to understand a way of looking at health and optimal performance that you do not hear in the mainstream. When this message is understood and spread, we walk towards a world of greater connection, awareness and well-being.

  • TFPP 029: Mindfulness, flow states and the convergence of technology and meditation
Dr. Judson Brewer plays in the space where science collides with the ancient practice of mindfulness meditation. He is a is a thought leader in the ‘science of self-mastery’ and contemplative science. Over the last 20 years he has  combined traditional mindfulness training with scientific research.
He has smashed out countless peer-reviewed articles, spoken at international conferences, and his work has been featured in 60 Minutes, TEDx, Time Magazine  (top 100 new health discoveries of 2013), Forbes,BBC, NPR, BusinessWeek and others. He is Director of Research at the Center of Mindfulness and an at UMass Medical School and an associate professor in medicine and psychiatry at UMass Medical School. He also is adjunct faculty at Yale University School of Medicine and research affiliate at MIT.
Judson is also a psychiatrist and internationally known expert in mindfulness training for addictions, and is leading the way in developing new mindfulness programs for addictions, including both in-person and app-based treatments (ex. www.cravingtoquit.com).
He is also a keen mountain biker, and flow-seeker, and he sees the path to peak performance as simply learning “to get out of the way of yourself”.

In this awesome 30 minute episode, we get into rituals, technology, how flow is practically the same states as a meditative state, and the importance of just enjoying the practice!!
It was a real pleasure having him on the show- I love talking to people who study the science and theory… but then go and play outside to put into practice.
    Flow & Mindfulness Quotes
-“Reality is so much more delicious than our concepts of it.”
-“I could see links between what the early Buddhist psychologists talked about and how my patients suffered”.
-“I would ask, was the Buddha a Buddhist? Or a guy trying to figure out where suffering was coming from.”
-“Buddhism is a very empirically derived process.”
-“Buddha was more concerned with figuring out how our minds worked than creating a religion.”
-“I experience flow when I get out of my own way”.
