"When I, Margreet Leguijt, and Siang-Lan got to know each other, we were talking about good food and drinks within five minutes. Years later I was looking for the perfect pizza with Anthony de Vries. In vain, because finding a really good pizza in Amsterdam was still quite a task. So we decided to start our own restaurant. And together with our best friends Siang-Lan Go and Dmitri Schokker. 

In 2009 we took the plunge. We found a building on the Haarlemmerdijk and made our plans a reality. Siang-Lan also wanted a cava bar, like in Barcelona. The concept of pizza & prosecco was born. We ate at literally every pizzeria in Amsterdam, followed a pizza baker's training and argued about the best dough and the tastiest prosecco.

After the opening, our cozy neighborhood restaurant immediately took off and within a year, restaurant number two, on the Overtoom, was opened. After opening four more restaurants, we started a franchise partnership with catering entrepreneurs in 2016, because we want everyone in the Netherlands to taste our Roman pizzas. "

This week we talk to Zhong Xu, CEO & Co-Founder of Deliverect.

Great tech is designed to solve problems & if you have ever run a restaurant, cafe, or bar with delivery you will be very aware that manning the delivery tablets, managing your internal operations as well as managing orders coming in from multiple Delivery providers is a challenge!!

Zhong saw this early and came up with a solution. After growing up in and around hospitality Zhong had a great understanding of what is required, especially since his father owned a Point of sales company that still supplies 90% of Asian restaurants in Belgium.

After creating the first Ipad POS , Zhong then went on to run the hospitality division of Lightspeed POS. 

After seeing that restaurants were processing nearly 30% of their orders through an emerging delivery revenue stream, Zhong was pressed to come up with a solution to enable the restaurants to manage their delivery orders and remove the tablets that were slowly taking over every back-of-house area!

Fast forward to today and Deliverect has over 200 employees and is servicing restaurant brands all over the world.

Deliverect has enabled brands to get their people back on the floor at peak time, enabled kitchen teams to just receive tickets as they normally would & increase capacity for the restaurants whilst eradicating human error, saving time, and most importantly driving sales as you are widening your shop window.

We work with Dishoom to ensure that they can deliver the same unique experience through delivery as they do inhouse, an objective Brian is openly obsessed with " You have to treat each online order like it was going out into the restaurant, we want to own the guest experience from start to finish "

THE OLD IRANI CAFÉS have almost disappeared. Their faded elegance welcomed all: rich businessmen, sweaty taxi-wallas and courting couples. Students had breakfast, families dined, lawyers read their briefs and writers found their characters. Fans turned slowly. Bentwood chairs were reflected in stained mirrors, next to sepia family portraits.

Opened early last century by Zoroastrian immigrants from Iran, there were almost four hundred cafés at their peak in the 1960s. Now, fewer than thirty remain. These cafés broke down barriers by bringing people together over food and drink. They were the first places in Bombay where people of any culture, class, or religion could take cool refuge from the street with a cup of chai, a simple snack, or a hearty meal. People from all walks of life shared tables, rubbed shoulders, and broke bread together.

Shared spaces beget shared experiences, and Bombay was more open and welcoming for the existence of these cafés.

Dishoom pays homage to the Irani cafés and the food of all Bombay.

During our conversation, we discuss how moving into the delivery space Brian and his team and have managed to protect jobs and actually add more roles to this brilliant brand. The pandemic has affected everyone and after 10 years of building this business, Brain was faced with a choice of what to do to enable the business to keep trading and keep innovating. 

With guest & team at the forefront of every decision that was made, Brian explains the journey of resisting delivery prior to the pandemic to ensure operations were not affected on-site to then moving forward with delivery to keep the brand moving, sourcing packaging, menu design & most importantly quality control & guest experience.
