Organized around the MLK2019 theme of We’re In This Together, the conversation is designed to create a space to critique, analyze and thoughtfully question assumptions about King and faith, King and community and King and society, and to ignite greater dialogue and programs of action that will infuse where we go from here.

Rebecca Solnit joins moderator Malcolm Young in a conversation about  the war at home,  a war “with so many casualties that we should call it by its true name, this war with so many dead by police, by violent ex-husbands and partners and lovers, by people pursuing power and profit at the point of a gun or just shooting first and figuring out who they hit later.” To get to the root of these American crises, she contends that “to acknowledge this state of war is to admit the need for peace,” countering the despair of our age with a dose of solidarity, creativity and hope.

Rev. Nontombi Naomi Tutu will talk with moderator Malcolm Young about the challenges of growing up black and female in apartheid South Africa–the foundation of her life as an activist for human rights, how those experiences taught her that our whole human family loses when we accept situations of oppression and how the teaching and preaching of hate and division injure us all.

Jeff Chang, with moderator Malcolm Young, will talk about cultural equity and justice in the arts sector, the rise and fall of the idea of “diversity,” the roots of student protest, changing ideas about Asian Americanness, and the unexamined condition of our time — resegregation.
