The five stages of change are a model that describes the process people go through to change a problem behavior into a healthy one: 

• Pre-contemplation
• The person doesn't think about the problem behavior or the need to change. They may be in denial or think they don't have a problem. 
  
  
• Contemplation
• The person considers the possibility that there might be a problem that needs changing. They may weigh the pros and cons of change. 
  
  
• Preparation
• The person is ready to make a change and may be actively gathering information and knowledge about the problem. 
  
  
• Action
• The person puts their plans into action and makes observable changes in their lifestyle. This stage is often stressful. 
  
  
• Maintenance
• The person strengthens and keeps the changes they've made. This stage occurs after the new behavior feels comfortable and is integrated into their life
