Four children on Espesett Farm go berry picking and befriend a large brown animal they mistake for a pig. The "pig" eats berries from the baby's cup, allows the children to feed it berries, shakes cones from a tree for them, and eats ants. When the milkmaid's call frightens the animal away, the children tell their parents about their new friend. The father discovers signs of a bear and realizes the children played with a harmless bear all afternoon, a story they never forgot and often retold to their children.
