Simeon’s song reflects this theme, as he found joy in recognizing Jesus as “the consolation of Israel”—the long-awaited fulfillment of God’s promise to the Jewish people. This week, we’re studying a Christmas song, but not a Christmas carol—we’re analyzing the timeless song of praise sung by Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist! Zechariah knew the Messiah was coming to fulfill God’s ancient promises to rescue, redeem, and restore His people. He also knew his son, John, had a special mission to prepare the hearts of the Jewish people to receive the Messiah, calling them to repentance. Zechariah’s song shouts the joyful news that the Redeemer has come and that God will guide His people into peace through Jesus the Messiah!
