The first is when your practices are something you do, the second is when they become a way of life. This refers to mastery. The third level goes beyond mastery and this is when the practices become life itself. A famous Japanese Swordsman once stated that if the mind is wrong, the sword will also be wrong. Meditation and other formal mental practices are critical for progress along the spiritual path and unless the mind is "right," all else is performed form a state of ego. The ordinary mind suffers from the goal-driven, instant gratification mental state of our entitled society. This is a mental sickness we must cure. When the mind is focused on the goal, it is dwelling in the future and the goal will never be attained. The mind needs to be present in our practices, for the sake of the practice and nothing more; only then will you know real success.
