* If the industry doesn’t get bots right, this will reduce the trust even further. If we mess this up entirely, there will be no trust in phone calls again.

* The cost of placing phone calls is effectively 0. You can place 100K calls with $100.

* What users care about is not WER but fluency of output

* AssemblyAI is doing a lot of human evaluations of models

* They used Google TPUv5 for training Universal-1

* They will always work to make STT models better, faster, and cheaper. STT market will grow faster once the models improve. New use cases will unlock.

* In 18mo-24mo models will be much more accurate

* Currently, AssemblyAI is highly focused on STT and Speech Understanding. TTS and Translation will come over time but not soon.

Scott is a dark matter physicist turned Deep Learning entrepreneur. He earned a PhD in particle physics from University of Michigan where his research involved building a lab two miles underground to detect dark matter. Scott left his physics post-doc research position to found Deepgram.

Deepgram is one of the largest API companies offering Speech AI technologies such as Speech-to-Text, Audio Intelligence and the recently launched Text-to-Speech. Deepgram’s technology provides high accuracy and naturalness across multiple languages and accents. The major use cases include contact centers, conversational AI, media transcription, and speech analytics.
