  • Bonus Commentaries: Can’t Smeg Won’t Smeg

With more details of the recordings of the two new series of Red Dwarf seemingly imminent, it seems like as good a time as any for a new edition of The Garbage Podcast. So, we should look at one of the high points of the show to celebrate the excitement we are all feeling, right? Right?

Well no, frankly that’d be effort, so instead this edition of the podcast has our commentary for Can’t Smeg Won’t Smeg. But as much as we joke about it, was it really that bad, or was it a quite enjoyable centrepiece to what is still the biggest celebration of the show on TV, Red Dwarf Night. I don’t know. Why are you asking me? We just recorded half an hour of commentary that (mostly) discussed that topic, so listen to that and I’ll get back to eating cereal in my underwear.

What was the thinking behind the show? Was the rice manoeuvre pre-planned? And is Ansley Harriott truly an oily God as the Change.com campaign would have you believe? These kitchen lubricated topics and more are discussed as Alex, James and Andrew look at an look at an unusual oddity.

  • The Garbage Podcast Series III Commentaries: The Last Day

In the concluding edition of our continuing celebration of Series III’s 25th anniversary, we take a look at The Last Day in our latest commentary.

As the third series draws to a close, it ends on a surprisingly melancholic note, perhaps more so than any other episode in this series. Yet melancholia is something the show hasn’t avoided, and it’s certainly to the strength of this episode. But it’s often an episode that is overlooked compared to the rest of the series.

Is this a fitting end to the series? Does the ending feel tacked on? And can this commentary manage to get through the whole episode without defending into a conversation about Dear Dave AGAIN? These unsurprising conversational turns and more are discussed as Alex, James and Andrew look at the episode and celebrate reaching the end of another round of podcasts, allowing them to dwell in inactivity once again!

  • The Garbage Podcast Series III Commentaries: Timeslides

In this edition of our continuing celebration of Series III’s 25th anniversary, we talk about Timeslides for our latest commentary.

It’s an episode that can sometimes be overlooked, but it’s scope in ideas, effects and sheer and plot should really be applauded as a fantastic addition to the series. It’s central idea is so good that it’s almost a shame it was never expanded on in the novels as the true extent of it’s ramifications are worthy of some of the better episodes of The Twilight Zone.

What makes this episodes form of time travel so unique and almost dark in nature? Just who would be taking a lot of these photographs and why? And just what is the limit of filth that Snappy Snaps are prepared to print on a cushion? These sofa adornment topics and more are discussed as Alex, James and Andrew look at the episode while barely talking about it as normal.

  • The Garbage Podcast Series III Commentaries: Bodyswap

In this edition of our continuing celebration of Series III’s 25th anniversary, we try not to get distracted by our male sexual organs as we talk about Bodyswap for our latest commentary.

Considering the mixed reaction to the way Series VII would record without an audience and then play it back to one to get a laugh track, it’s often easy to forget how much of the show was often pre-filmed. This episode features a fair share of pre-recording due to it’s mind shifting concept, but survives supprisingly well considering. Or maybe it’s that we’re all just too enamoured by Chris’ impression of Craig to care.

Would anyone really eat mash head first? Just what is it that makes this series look so different from any other? And just what is the worse piece of merchandise; Mrs Brown’s Boys boxer shorts with the phrase ‘Lovely Baubles’ on them, or ‘Red Dwarf: The Log’? These topics and more are available for £4.99 from Asda as Alex, James and Andrew look at the episode while barely talking about it as normal.

  • The Garbage Podcast Series III Commentaries: Polymorph

In this edition of our continuing celebration of Series III’s 25th anniversary, we sit around in the audio nip to talk about Polymorph for our latest commentary.

Series III shows a very conscious aping of Alien in it’s design, so it seems only fitting that it’s third episode should be a direct spoof of the film. It’s also arguably the point at which the show switches into the action-adventure mode that would become a staple of the show in later series. All this combined with scenes that garnered some of the biggest ever audience reactions certainly makes this show something of an important milestone.

Does this episode contain the funniest moment in the history of the show? What templates did it set for future episodes? And have you ever eaten a kebab that looked like a turd? These microwave friendly topics and more are discussed as Alex, James and Andrew look at an episode that is difficult to surpass.
