A comment on The Garden of Paradox, by Rabbi DoverBer Pinson
Rabbi DovBer Pinson is a contemporary sage who brings to bear in his own person the esoteric teachings of the great Jewish mystics and hasidic masters, on the one hand, and the commentaries of rabbinic scholars who have informed "normative Judaism" over the centuries, on the other. He raises up the meanings hidden in scriptural texts by bringing the mystical and scholarly wings of Jewish tradition to bear in elucidating them--and by something else, his attunement to what his students are experiencing in the presence of the unfolding of the mystery of sacred texts. Illuminating the spiritual riches of the text and lifting up his students occur simultaneously, thanks to his mediating between the entire range of the Tradition and his moment-to-moment awareness of his students' perplexities and revelations, which reach them through learning with him. I say this on the basis of my nine years of experience as his student. What makes The Garden of Paradox exceptional among his many works is that it adheres to the spiritual process intrinsic to his dialogue with students. In this book, he "strips away the outer layers of the Kabbalah that most conceal its core teachings" by orienting his teaching to three students, an intellectual or scholarly one, a doer of good deeds or social activist, and an introspective or mystical one. Here, writing "take the form of real-time dialogues, as conversations and exchanges that serve to highlight the Essential level of Kaballah." In this book, as at the table of Rav Pinson, the intertwining of exegesis and spiritual experiencing occur as a collaboration between the creativity and wisdom that teacher and students inspire in each other.
