Jesus basically assumes that we don’t know who we are. That is, we have culturally constructed identities, given to us generally or by the groups we associate with (i.e. I'm a baker, a sower; I’m outdoorsy). While some identifies are simple and even hopeful; we can also have shameful identities spoken over our lives - words about our ethnicity, our body, our sexual desires. These words shape the contours of our souls.

In all these spaces the gospel according to Mark invites us to look in the mirror and reflect on who we are. Jesus is interested in all of us - our desires, our fears, our hopes - to draw us into the upside down hope of God’s Kingdom.
