The Gateway Church

This week Tom continued our sermon series, The Psalms of Ascent.

In this series Tom is not angling to produce scholarly expositions of these psalms but to offer practical insights that see these songs as a basic framework of encouragement and guidance for discipleship as we each and together as a church are formed evermore into the image of Christ as he molds us in the “in between” space.

Between the time we leave home and arrive at our destination; between the time we leave adolescence and arrive at adulthood; between the time we leave doubt and arrive at faith.

This week Tom wrapped up his sermon series, The Psalms of Ascent, with Psalms 134.

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus… Philippians 2:5

. If Jesus’ claims about himself prove to be true and we are actually loved by God in Christ, what do we do? Where do we go? This teaching is not an exhaustive answer by any means; rather, it is an answer for our community in this transitional season. So where do we go? Deeper into vulnerability, deeper into love, deeper into Christ Jesus. Yet, where we are and where we hope to be are often at odds with one another. So this week we turn to Paul’s words in Philippians and the ancient wisdom of Genesis to see the gap and our way forward in Christ.

This Sunday we had the pleasure of having Kyle McMahon and his family visit us as a part of their candidacy weekend. Kyle shared with us a sermon that aims to help us see that breadth of the gospel and its implications for here and now. The themes of a new creation (Eden), fulfilled promises (Israel), and deliverance from the oppressor (Rome) all emerge from Mark 1:1 and that's where we'll be.
