When Jesus taught us to pray "Thy kingdom come," He was inviting us to ask for God's perfect reign to be established in our lives. The Kingdom of God isn't a distant place but refers to God's rule and authority. This Kingdom is both a present reality and a future hope awaiting complete fulfillment.
Throughout the Old Testament, God desired to rule His people directly, but they repeatedly chose human kings who ultimately failed. Jesus came as the perfect King, demonstrating a Kingdom that operates through sacrifice and service rather than force and power. When we pray for God's Kingdom to come, we're asking Him to replace our imperfect rule with His perfect governance in every area of our lives. The Book of Joel serves as a training manual for spiritual maturity, revealing that the greatest outpouring of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2 came through intentional prayer; but not just any prayer- specifically the Lord's Prayer. Joel prophesies of an ultimate Day of the Lord that will be positive for the prepared but terrible for the unprepared.
