Mark teaches the next message in the Deep Christian Community series, which John has been leading. He opens with a bank teller who told him people had hurt her, so she now limits her life to her husband and kids. Mark answers the question "Why bother with relationships?" from the Bible: we are joined to Christ and to each other, love is how the world sees Jesus, and the more love we give, the more of God's love we experience. He ends by naming the one word that kills love, "if," and its partner, "if it's convenient," then leads a time of listening prayer and a call to risk love.

• We need reminding more than teaching. Most Christians know what the Bible says about love. The problem is that we forget and slip back into old habits.

• "If" turns love into a condition. "I'll go if... I'll serve if... I'll love if it's convenient." Convenience means "suited to my comfort or ease."

In Part 2 of the Getting Real series, Mark moves from last week's teaching on the masks we wear to a bigger question: how does a church build a culture of honesty? He opens with the story of Mary, a committed teenage camper who met God in a powerful way after she finally told Him her anger about her father's suffering. His main point is that we experience as much of God as we are honest with Him, and that honesty is only safe where there is grace. He draws a clear line between acceptance (what God gives us, and we give others, unconditionally) and approval (what God gives to obedience), then shows how to correct others with humility, prayer, and tears instead of judgment.

honesty is the ground floor of every real relationship — with other people, with yourself, and with God. He argues that you cannot love someone you do not know, so a pleasant lie does more damage than an unpleasant truth, and dishonesty is not a threat to relationship but the opposite of it. Using four hand-drawn graphs, he shows how we build a "photoshopped" self-image out of our best moments while burying our worst ones, and how those buried memories stay active as places where the enemy plants lies about God, ourselves, and others. Gary and a second leader add that naming a lie gives God room to expose and break it, and that people recognize counterfeits by knowing the real thing — the voice of Jesus. The service ends with a guided listening exercise: ask the Holy Spirit what lie you are believing, then ask what truth destroys it, write that word down, and keep it where you can see it.

When God called you, He didn’t just call you to His Son, but also to His Body, the Church. He has called you to deep community. It is this kind of community that will enable you to fulfill God’s purpose for your life and be a witness to the world that we truly are followers of Jesus.
