I’ve been a little MIA lately and you can probably tell why: it’s not COVID-19! It’s just a wee head cold, but it’s really derailed me. I will try my best to edit out the sniffles, but if I miss any, I apologize in advance.

I’m really excited to get back into it! I LOVE October and Halloween has to be my favourite holiday and time of year. And where I am, we’re getting a nice elongated autumn, so I feel like it’s one positive to come out of 2020 so far. So, in honour of my favourite time of year, I’ve asked you guys to submit ghost stories for me to share in a new segment later on in the podcast. Head’s up that the episodes might run a little longer than usual with this new segment: one of the stories I’m saving for closer to Halloween is long and terrifying.

But let’s get into the episode first. Quick note that, if you haven’t played Dragon Age Origins, then you’ll be lost in this one. And, if you haven’t played it yet but want to, this episode is chock-full of spoilers. Surprise surprise: we’re talking Dragon Age again! But this time we’re going back to the start with Dragon Age: Origins.

I love horror movies. Whether it’s an Eli Roth special, a “horror” movie like Jurassic Park (though I don’t totally agree that Jurassic Park movies are horror), campy horror, psychological horror, or something “B-roll” that’s available on Prime – I love them.

Being afraid of the dark and the unknown, I now know, was due to my control freak tendencies: I have a hard time not being in control (hence why I love the Sims), but I also realize that this fear stemmed from a deep lack of confidence in myself. My self-esteem has never been high and I still struggle with self-love, but one day I had this idea to embrace that fear instead of run from it as running from it only gives it more strength and validity. It took awhile, but it worked, and now I can call myself a true horror fan.

Let’s dive into the Sims. The Sims was the first computer game I played, other than those Monopoly and other virtual board games that came with McDonald’s meals – remember those? Those were fun and always exciting to see what you’d get. Life was the best. But the Sims was my first nosedive into video games: my cousins played it and I was allowed to play it when we would go over there and everyone else was being social. It was my quick intro into typing and modding.

I am a sucker for good hair. It’s like that meme I quoted a few episodes back: “you can’t save the galaxy if you ain’t cute”. Well, in the Sims, you can’t meet someone, get Flirty, get engaged, and then get married, WooHoo, and then have a baby with them all in the same day if you ain’t cute, so I relied on other Simmers to create hairstyles that could… uh basically get my Sim laid.

It’s been three episodes of BioWare and I think we’re all ready to have a little #BioWareBreak. If you haven’t had your fill then don’t worry – we’ll be back to BioWare eventually. For this episode, however, we dive into another series that has been a massive influence for me in terms of strong female characters: Jurassic Park.
