LoMIS: Digital Solutions to Routine Immunization Challenges in Nigeria

The medical logistics supply chain in Nigeria faces several challenges that prevent the country from achieving universal health coverage by 2030 and the health-related Sustainable Development Goals.

These challenges include a lack of infrastructure, inadequate government investment in healthcare, a lack of data to assist healthcare providers in making informed decisions, and a lack of end-to-end transparency in the supply chain.

These challenges result in issues such as stockouts of essential medical supplies, inefficiencies in the supply chain, and increased costs.

In partnership with Uniting to Combat NTDs, health workers from NTD-endemic regions will share their experiences, challenges, and successes in tackling these diseases that affect the world’s most marginalized communities.

We’ll explore the devastating impact of NTDs, innovative prevention strategies, the power of community engagement, and the emerging threat of climate change on NTD transmission.

The morning will conclude with a focus on ending malaria, as health workers from affected communities share their insights on the challenges, successes, and opportunities in rolling back this deadly disease.

We’ll delve into lessons learned from community engagement and behavior change strategies, the need for equitable access to interventions, and the path towards the ambitious goal of malaria eradication.

The Geneva Learning Foundation, convened the second meeting of its network of immunization leaders across Nigeria. The meeting laid the groundwork for the upcoming Nigeria Immunization Collaborative, in partnership with UNICEF and Nigeria's National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), a pioneering initiative to engage and empower health workers at all levels to strengthen routine immunization in the country.

Set to officially launch on June 20 at the Teach to Reach 10 conference, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Expanded Programme on Immunization, the Collaborative will bring together health professionals from all 36 states and the FCT. Through peer learning, experience sharing, and locally-led projects, participants will develop solutions to overcome barriers to immunization, reaching underserved communities and marginalized populations.

The Geneva Learning Foundation's strong alumni presence in Nigeria, the largest in its global network, forms the backbone of this effort. Alumni ambassadors and leaders of the country's Immunization Agenda 2030 (IA2030) movement have already reached nearly 30,000 colleagues in their dissemination drive. Their insights are shaping the Collaborative's design to maximize impact and participation.

Key recommendations emerging from the meeting include clearly communicating benefits to health workers, advocating for expanded roles for professionals such as pharmacists, engaging stakeholders at state and LGA levels, involving religious and community leaders, and emphasizing career advancement opportunities. By tailoring the approach to Nigeria's context, the organizers aim to attract a diverse cohort of committed immunization champions.

Running from July 15-29, the Collaborative will feature virtual General Assembly sessions, peer support, and guided project development and review. Participants will earn competency-based certification upon completion. Beyond the exercise itself, insights generated will feed into national and state-level immunization strategies and policies.

With COVID-19 disruptions leaving millions of Nigerian children un- or under-vaccinated, this groundbreaking initiative couldn't be more timely. Through country-wide collaboration, it promises to harness the immense potential of Nigeria's health workforce to reimagine immunization service delivery and secure a healthier future for every child.

The partner coordination call on June 13, 2024, served as a "dress rehearsal" for the upcoming Teach to Reach 10 global conference, set to take place on June 20-21. Reda Sadki, Charlotte Mbuh, and María Fernanda Monzón, the "Teach to Reach Trio," hosted the call, which aimed to provide practical information and guidance for partners and participants.

Key highlights from the call include:

1. Participation: As of the call, 21,161 people had registered for Teach to Reach 10, a significant increase from previous editions.

2. Partner recognition: Organizations that met specific requirements, such as attending partner briefings, sharing the Teach to Reach invitation, and providing logos, were recognized as official partners. A diverse range of organizations from various sectors and countries were represented.

3. Lightning Chats: Upcoming Lightning Chats featuring global health leaders such as Maria Nera (WHO), David Akpan (eHealth Africa), and Kate O'Brien (WHO) were announced. Participants were encouraged to subscribe to the calendar to stay informed.

4. RingCentral platform: A tutorial was provided on how to register and navigate the RingCentral platform, where the conference will be hosted. Key features such as networking, scheduling, and interactive sessions were highlighted.

5. Conference schedule: The detailed schedule for June 20 (English) and June 21 (French) was presented, including the opening ceremony, partner showcases, workshops, and networking sessions.

6. Celebration of milestones: The conference will celebrate 50 years of the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) and its impact on saving children's lives.

7. Workshops and future plans: Due to the overwhelming response from partners, the organizers are planning to provide more opportunities for partner organizations to showcase their work in future Teach to Reach events.

8. Social media engagement: Participants were encouraged to actively share and engage with Teach to Reach content on social media platforms to increase visibility and participation.
