Jess and Less talk about gun violence, specifically as it relates to the recent mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas in Parkland, FL, and more generally about what should be done about it - and what shouldn't.
Things like arming teachers? SHOULD NOT BE DONE. That is stupid. On the other hand, universal background checks and requiring insurance/liability on gun owners? We are for it. Opinions are mixed on whether people should have access to different types of guns. Lots of props to the kids who are leading the way. We are here to stand in support of you and help in any way we can.
Jess and Less discuss a range of topics including the White Feminism of the Women's March (and the related schism in the Cincinnati area activist community) and the State of the Union. With some digressions about IKEA and escape plans, and how we have a real live organic fan! (Hi Anya! Hi Mom!)
Jess & Less return in 2018 to talk about the Women's March 2018 (National Call to Action "Hear Our Vote") and discuss how electoral politics, while important, are not the be all and end all in activism or importance, is it an inclusive tactic, as some may like to believe. Other discussions: Immigration, a bit about the tax legislation, how each of us should choose our lane but recognize that everything is connected/intersectional, and why maybe Lysistrata is our only hope.
The Girls dissect racism in America. Again. Because apparently, it's a thing. Who knew?!
All sarcasm aside, we talk about Ta'Nahesi Coates' new article in The Atlantic calling Trump America's "First White President." He makes some valid points that require further analysis. We discuss the uproar about Jemele Hill speaking truth to power about Trump being a white supremacist and how ESPN handled the issue and compare and contrast with Miss Texas's answer about Trump and white supremacy in the Miss America pageant.
Plus, Colin Kaepernick's protest, Jason Shockley's verdict, Hurricanes Irma and Harvey, U2, wild-fires, earthquakes, NYC tenancy issues.
Also, did you know Hillary Clinton has a new book out? WHAT HAPPENED? We also want to know that, Hillary. We need like about a million hours to go over that. Not sure we have the time.
This podcast is dedicated to the memory of Heather Heyer, who was murdered by a terrorist attack in Charlottesville, VA on August 12, 2017.
The Girls discuss how Nazis rallied in Charlottesville this weekend and the response from counter-protesters and antifa. Jessica, a former Charlottesville resident, talks about how her friends were effected by the events of this weekend and gives some local information regarding the politics of the area. Lessa discusses what fascism is (pro-tip: It has NOTHING to do with socialism) and why you're either a fascist or an anti-fascist, there's no middle ground.
The Girls discuss how the Handmaid's Tale is a white woman's dystopian nightmare. That doesn't negate the fact it's happening now and is scary AF, but historically women's reproductive rights have been squashed as a form of oppression for women of color.
We can't stand idly by and pretend this isn't happening. We must act now. Discussion from CA to TX to TN to global access.
The Girls discuss wealth inequality through the lens of white nationalism, trickle-down economics, who benefits from the welfare state, and what the future of employment could possibly look like with the rise of AI.
We also discuss how women are more greatly impacted by the downshift in the economic opportunities available.
All of this is in honor of Bastille Day and Marie Antoinette's infamous quote that the peasants, who were starving, could eat cake. Vive la Revolution!
Imagine the perfect world. Imagine how you get there. What does it take? How do you take control of your reality in a useful way? How do we as a society embrace revolutionary acts that will make everyone's life better?
The Girls discuss all this and more.
The Girls discuss how authoritarianism warps Americans' views of liberty and freedom. Topics include a woman convicted for laughing at Jeff Sessions, the passing of the AHCA in the House, Trump's plans for a coup, the need for direct independent political action, and why neither Jess nor Less read Reddit.
We discuss the political and social implications of the Georgia O'Keeffe exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum.
But sexy poppies aren't the point, when we have nepotism and complicity from Trump's daughter and SIL and corruption is EVERYWHERE within the regime.
We're tired, especially, of the Democratic Party eschewing Progressive and Radical candidates in favor of those within the Establishment. Be BOLD, Dems. Be Bold.
