The Fighting Irish are fighting to hide a bit of American history.

Administrators at the University of Notre Dame say they'll cover a Christopher Columbus mural that appears on a wall in their main building because some minority students say it is offensive because Columbus and other Europeans mistreated native Americans.

Woven materials will hang over the mural which was painted in the 1880's.

Cabot Phillips of Campus Reform's Leadership Institute says, the mural should remain because Columbus played an important role in discovering America. He suggests Columbus was flawed and made mistakes, but the nation needs to examine its history to find out where it went wrong.

"The worst thing is to cover it all up, pretend it didn't happen and just hold up other people as who we should be honoring."
