The Israelites went from looking up to the Lord on Mount Sinai, to looking down on themselves on the earth. Wanting a new leader, they gave Aaron—Moses’ own brother—all their golden earrings and made a "god" for themselves.

And the LORD said to Moses,  “Go down, for your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves."Exodus 32:7
