  • #83 Karen Ostenried | PTSD Recovery | Horse Therapy & Team Building
Karen Ostenried has worn many hats over the years. From professional singer to
aerobics instructor, to the Chief Operations officer of an international biotech
company. Karen impressively has three world firsts in medical technology
accredited to her, and a number of Australian firsts in creating genetic models of
    human diseases.

In 2009, Karen’s world would change forever. One week after she retired from the
field of science, she would be faced with the devastating Black Saturday bushfires
that tore through Victorian bushland causing widespread devastation and the
greatest loss of life from fire since colonisation. One hundred and seventy-three
people tragically lost their lives, 414 were injured, more than a million wild and
domesticated animals were lost, and 450,000 hectares of land were burned. Karen’s
Kinglake property destroyed, however one of her horses survived. Nursing the horse
back to health proved more difficult that she first imagined and in 2011 she took my
horse to Equine Assisted Therapy. Through this process, Karen quickly realised that
she needed to heal as much as her beloved horse.

By 2017, Karen qualified as an Equine Assisted Learning Facilitator. The primary
driver of this form of learning is to develop an expanded awareness of firstly self and
then of others. It develops essential life skills which can lead to success in all areas
of life and business, and the purest form of leadership.

Although Karen uses horses, it is very much Human Centred Design. It relies on
being present to fully comprehend everything around you, calm the mind and make
good decisions with empathy, accountability, and teamwork. It also relies on trust.
Today Karen’s business – The Matanya Effect, and Leadership Revolution, work
with Corporate Organisations to small businesses around team building and
leadership skills. She also works with people with low support Autism, some NDIS
clients for life skills, Teams, families, sports, business, community groups and all
levels of leadership up to C suite.

After a decade of teaching, Mish Wright started her second career as a Group Fit Instructor and Personal Trainer. Mish is the founder of the multi-award-winning fitness business franchise mishfit®, which specialised in training women.

Sadly, it’s a fact that all education that fitness professionals undertake is based on the
research of young fit men. Mish is passionate about educating everyone in the fitness
industry in what she calls the “missing education” of women’s health. Mish has created
EVEolution™ an online program to help women navigate exercise – no matter what age or
stage they are at. Mish doesn’t shy away from issues women may face while exercising,
including prolapse and pelvic floor weakness, periods, and perimenopause.

For over 12 years Mish has been writing, presenting, educating, and mentoring fitness
professionals in business, women’s health, and training older adults. Mish created the
Women’s Health and Fitness Summit (2014 – 2019) that brought together Fit Pro’s and Allied Health professionals to start relationships and conversations that are still resonating today.

  • #81 Debra Dank PhD | Gudanji/Wakaja Educator and Author - We Come With This Place
Today in the Confessional, Sandy chats with Educator and Author, Debra Dank. Debra is a proud Gudanji/Wakaja woman who has worked in teaching and learning for over 40 years. Debra was the first Project Manager for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation when it was Constituted in 2011 and completed her PhD in Narrative Theory and Semiotics in 2021.

She has just released her book, We Come with This Place. The collection of recounts which form We Come with This Place, tells something of who the Gudanji are as a community and as a family. The experiences reflect the events and the living of Deb’s family from the very beginning through to colonial times of living in remote Queensland/ Northern Territory, events in the 60’s and 70’s to the present. Importantly, it gives Gudanji context to the horrors of living on cattle stations and remote places, along with the utter joy of family and the nature of trying to maintain those ties and links to, and living with, Country.

We Come with This Place is a remarkable book, as rich, varied, and surprising as the vast
landscape in which it is set. Debra has created an extraordinary mosaic of vivid episodes
that move about in time and place to tell an unforgettable story of Country and people. She
writes beautifully about connection to Country and the ongoing relationships with all kin as
    practised by Gudanji people.

Debra calibrates human emotions with honesty and insight, with plenty of dry, down-to-
earth humour. You can feel and smell and see the puffs of dust under moving feet, the ever-
present burning heat, the bright exuberance of a night-time campfire, the emerald flash of a
flock of budgerigars, the journeying wind, the harshness of station life, the welcome scent
    of fresh water.

We Come with This Place is deeply personal, a profound tribute to family and the Gudanji
Country to which Debra Dank belongs, but it is much more than that. Here is Australia as it
has been for countless generations, land and people in long-practised balance, and Australia
as it became, but also Australia as it could and should be. The shared history of this
continent is much contested, and this book provides an alternative Australian story.
Please welcome Debra to The Good Girl Confessional.

  • #79 Dr. Lisa Beckett | Medical GP & Tech Entrepreneur | Founder of Candor
Today in the Confessional, host Sandy Lowres chats with an incredible innovator! There’s a raft of unspoken health and wellbeing issues great and small that are faced by the general public and sometimes the distress these issues can cause, means patients can go years before mustering the courage to seek help. With new technology, and the digitisation of health, finding a solution might be as simple as picking up your phone or opening your laptop.

Dr.Lisa Beckett has built a successful career as a medical GP in Australia but after recognising a void with medical consultations, Lisa founded a Telehealth platform called Candor, which allows patients to book online consultations with fully qualified doctors to discuss and treat issues such as sexual health (contraception needs, erectile disfunction etc), medicinal marijuana treatments (chemo and cancer care, chronic pain, sleep disorders), skin care solutions and hair loss.

Candor is an online platform that allows patients to access comprehensive, evidence-based medical care through a simple online form. Candor’s services cover a wide range of medical conditions including hair loss, allergies, sleep issues, contraception, acne and more.

Patients consult online, and fill out an online assessment form which is then reviewed by an Australian GP who provides a tailored treatment plan and prescription. No need to visit a pharmacy: the prescription is delivered straight to your door.

  • #78 - Virginia Maywald | Raunchy Reading! | Anna Buckley Books - Erotic Fiction Writer
Today in the Confessional, Sandy chats with Virginia Maywald who writes incredible and popular erotic fiction for women under her pen name Anna Buckley. She writes books that are about women taking control of their lives - financially, emotionally and sexually. Her books are set across the world featuring art, architecture, design, fashion, food and wine.

When Virginia first read erotic fiction like 50 Shades of Grey, she realised that there was a need for more erotic fiction, based around believable women who took ownership of their sexuality. Virginia wanted to create books that would allow the reader to experience an escape from life while enjoying eroticism.

The Anna Buckley books started with a trilogy centred around the character Christina Maxwell, an ordinary woman who had put her life on hold being the good wife.
She is forced to make drastic changes after the untimely death of her husband.
Her trilogy - Awakening the Lost Woman, Capturing the Lost Woman and Finding the Lost Woman follow the widow on her journey of sexual and emotional awakening.

Based in the tropical paradise of Cairns in far north Queensland, Virginia gives us a sneak look also at her soon to be released book, where she has created a whole new character for readers to follow.
