In this sermon, we take a close look at one of the best-loved moments in Handel's Messiah when the prophet Isaiah promises a surprising gift: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given.” It is, of course, true, as Jesus himself said, that it is better to give than to get. Yet Isaiah reminds us that the greatest of all gifts is not one we offer, but one we receive.
