What does the Day of the Lord have to do with the death of Jesus Christ? 

And why does Amos 8 speak of the Day of the Lord as darkness and judgment?

In Amos 8, God warns Israel about the coming Day of the Lord—a day of judgment, darkness, and punishment for sin. But the New Testament reveals something astonishing: the judgment that believers deserve fell upon Jesus Christ at the cross.

When Jesus was crucified, darkness covered the land from noon until three in the afternoon. This echoes Amos's description of the Day of the Lord: “I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight” (Amos 8:9). The darkness surrounding Christ's death points to the judgment of God being poured out upon Jesus as he bore the sins of his people.

This changes how Christians should think about the future Day of the Lord and the second coming of Jesus. For those who are in Christ, the coming Day of the Lord is not a day of condemnation. Christ has already borne their punishment. When he appears again, he comes “to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him” (Hebrews 9:28).

In this message from Amos 8, we consider the relationship between Old Testament prophecy, the Day of the Lord, the cross of Christ, substitutionary atonement, the second coming, and the believer's hope of salvation.

Rather than fearing the return of Christ, Christians can long for it. The coming Day of the Lord means the end of sin, temptation, suffering, decay, and death—and the beginning of everlasting blessing with Christ.

In this episode of The Gospel for Living, we continue our study of Amos 8 and consider a crucial question:

How should we respond to the coming Day of the Lord?

The message of Amos is not merely that God's judgment is coming. It also confronts us with the question of how we respond to God's warnings. Should we ignore them, put the evil day far away, and continue living as though there will never be consequences? Or should we seek the Lord, repent, mourn over sin, and turn to Him?

Amos provides a striking contrast. Nineveh heard God's warning and repented. Israel heard God's warnings repeatedly and refused to repent. The Ninevites humbled themselves in sackcloth and fasting, while God's own people continued in sin until judgment came upon them.

We also consider the example of King Hezekiah, who responded to God's Word with repentance, faithfulness, and a renewed seeking of the Lord. The contrast is clear: God's warnings are meant to awaken us, not merely to inform us.

What does biblical repentance really look like? Why is sackcloth and fasting associated throughout Scripture with grief over sin and judgment? What does Jonah teach us about Nineveh, Israel, and the purpose of God's warnings? And why should we repent if God's judgment seems far away?

This study of Amos 8 also connects the message of the prophets with Jonah, Hezekiah, Romans 1, and the Biblical teaching concerning God's judgment, human sin, repentance, and seeking the Lord.

Why does God sometimes allow people to sin without immediate consequences?

Does prosperity, peace, or an apparently trouble-free life mean that God approves of us?

In this episode of The Gospel for Living, we continue our study of Amos 8 and consider a sobering biblical truth: the absence of immediate judgment is not the same thing as God's approval. Israel was deeply sinful, yet prosperous. They ignored God's commands, corrupted worship, and continued in rebellion—and for a time, nothing seemed to happen.

But Amos warns that judgment was coming.

This passage helps us understand God's patience, the delay of judgment, and the certainty of the coming Day of the Lord. Scripture repeatedly warns us not to interpret God's patience as permission to continue in sin. As Peter explains in 2 Peter 3, people may scoff at the promise of Christ's return because judgment has not yet come—but God's delay does not mean that His promise has failed.

We also consider the relationship between God's patience and His grace toward His people. God does not always discipline His children immediately or punish us as our sins deserve. That patience should lead us to repentance—not to complacency.

Does God forget the sins we have committed?

Why did darkness fall over the land when Jesus died on the cross?

In Amos 7:1–9, God gives the prophet Amos three visions of judgment: locusts, fire, and finally a plumb line. What does the plumb line reveal about us? 

In this sermon, “Torn Down & Built Up,” we see that God is sovereign over both blessing and calamity, that His holy standard exposes our sin, and that apart from Christ we rightly deserve His judgment. 

But Amos 7 also points us toward the good news of God’s mercy: the Lord relents in response to Amos’s intercession, ultimately pointing us to Jesus Christ, our great High Priest, who intercedes for His people and bore the judgment our sins deserved. 

For those who trust in Christ, God’s work of destruction becomes good news—our relationship with sin is broken, our sinful practices are progressively put to death, our souls are being renewed, and ultimately our bodies will be raised and made imperishable when Christ returns.
