The Gospel of Mark is considered by some to be the first gospel written and that Matthew and Luke expanded upon his work. The author was writing to a particularly Roman audience that shares a lot of cultural similarities to us. His gospel is straightforward for a modern western reader and is focused on showing how the Kingdom of God was stronger and greater than the kingdom of Rome while weaving in the OT themes with a consistent thread from Genesis through the life and teachings of Jesus.
