The story of Jesus's baptism in the Gospel of Mark continues to pull imagery from the Old Testament as a sinless Jesus is not being baptized to be "saved" or forgiven for his sins. Instead it points to the truth that Jesus is the way to the promised land. Just as the Jordan waters were parted by Joshua and again by Elijah and Elisha, the waters parted as God reveals Jesus is his son and he is pleased with him.
