Seven key features of human existence are freedom, beauty, truth, power, justice, love and spirituality. We all desperately want these things but we never seem to get them right. That is the plight of human nature and all seven were at the core of what happened at the cross. The ultimate victory, signalling the end of a war which had raged since Eden’s loss, was won right there at the cross.

Pastor Sue focuses our thoughts particularly on power - exemplified in Jesus’ appearance before Pilate - a political and religious power confrontation. She encourages us to connect the cross with Pentecost, confirming our vocation, calling and identity, and becoming bringers of love, beauty, power etc into this present darkness.

Using stories from his own experience, and a solid exegesis of the Bible passage, Matt applies Jesus’ parable of “The Workers in the Vineyard” to God’s call on our lives to care for the poor, the weak, the sick, the elderly, the helpless, those with disabilities, the marginalised.

The last will be first and the first will be last as God uses disproportionate grace to bless people. Matt assures us that we are also called to live a life of disproportionate grace and generous justice. This is the only way to bring God’s “shalom” to a broken, dark and needy world.

There is a simple, but not simplistic, model of discipleship in scripture. You become like the people you spend time with. By modelling. By osmosis. Time with God and time with strong Christians will transform us, build us up, disciple us.

Theo explains Jesus’ invitation to us to have a relationship with him, just as he had an intimate relationship with his Father, only doing what he saw the Father doing. We disciple people towards Jesus. We disciple people after they come to know Jesus.

We welcome all. We help them to grow. As a church we provide good role models. We provide a framework, for growth. We invest in the few got the sake of the many.

Find a person of peace and disciple them - this is Theo’s word of encouragement to us.
