After International Programs' decision to pause the 2023 faculty-led Jordan summer program, Life and Arts Editor Tanya Yarian discusses her reporting on the story. The 2022 program the year prior experienced an outbreak of COVID-19, which factored into the decision to pause the program for this year.

“We had a really difficult time this year and we needed to slow down and make sure that we were better prepared for a post-pandemic operation of the program on both sides,” said Ron Cox, interim dean of International Programs.

The addition of four off-campus hotels helped the University handle the omicron surge, but not everything went smoothly for the students. One hotel had to close its restaurant due to a staff COVID outbreak, some students did not understand at the start of their isolation when would end and the University lost a hotel contract because students left their rooms. • Regenerative Agriculture: Rethinking Beef for People & The Planet

Since the industrial revolution, experts say the way beef is produced and consumed in America has become damaging to both people’s health and the environment. The solution found by environmentalists, nutrition experts and farmers alike is regenerative farming — a technique that restores livestock grazing to the way it was done before the industrial revolution. The benefits of this solution are explored in this episode, as well as potential challenges to implementing this change within a system that doesn’t support it. Hear from Emily Ziedman, a certified nutritionist and nutrition researcher, Chris Doran, Religion Professor and founder of the Sustainability minor at Pepperdine, and Kacie Scherler, Pepperdine alum and regenerative farmer, in this exploration of solutions to consume beef in a way that benefits both people and the planet. Featured music: “Action Investigation,” “Love Planet,” and “Ambient Point of No Return” by Komiku, “Game On” by Soft and Furious,“View Back Softly” by Lobo Loco and assorted by Jeremy Zerbe.

  • A Journalist & A Survivor Reflect on the Inner Workings of A Sexual Assault Investigation

In this episode, former Graphic reporter and alumna (2020) Channa Steinmetz reveals the inner workings of her years-long reporting on a workplace sexual assault allegation within Pepperdine’s Department of Public Safety. The investigation occurred in Spring 2019 — the article later published in Spring 2020. The article states that no report was ever made to law enforcement, and alleged assaulter "John Smith" faced no legal charges. Although the university cleared Smith of all allegations, the report raises questions about how the department conducts internal investigations and the role this plays in the Student Disciplinary Committee’s decision making. Later in the episode, reported survivor "Jane Doe" reflects on her journey to healing and finding forgiveness. Featured music: "Profound-Mystery-Master" by John Bartmann, "Four Years" by Monplaisir, "Sweet Me" by Loyalty Freak Music, and assorted by Jeremy Zerbe.
