Today’s topic is “The Greatest Commandment.”
A scribe asks Jesus what the most important commandment is. Jesus answers and even gives the scribe a bonus. Jesus answers: “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” Mark 12 verses 29 to 31.
The scribe, who thought he was putting Jesus in a difficult situation, was forced to recognize that the answer was appropriate. The scribe then said: “Well, Master, Thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but He: and to love Him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbor as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.”, Mark 12:32 and 33.
The scribe was honest. He saw the clarity and simplicity of Jesus’ response and said so. One can imagine scowls from other religious leaders since the honest scribe had affirmed Jesus’ reply as valid, something no one else was willing to do. Jesus also affirmed the scribe for his honest answer, saying he was not far from the kingdom of God. Not far does not mean inside. The scribe still needed to recognize who Jesus was and follow Him, a further step in the journey of faith.
The readiness of this man to acknowledge the correctness of Christ’s reasoning and his decided and prompt response before the people manifested a spirit entirely different from that of the priests and rulers. The heart of Jesus went out in pity to the honest scribe who had dared to face the priests' frowns and the rulers' threats to speak the convictions of his heart.
Jesus summarized the Ten Commandments as loving God and loving your neighbor. Love for God contemplates the first four commandments, and love for our neighbor reflects the last six commandments. In Romans 13, verse 10, Paul declares that the law's fulfillment is love.
