We left the story with the Hughes Glomar Explorer leaving its west coast staging grounds in search of the wreckage of a Soviet ballistic missile submarine. Its goal was to recover the sub from below three miles of ocean and return it to the surface to learn about the nuclear weapons she carried, and the navy that she belonged to.
