The Green Journey Across America

Leaving Boulder was tough, not just because of the town’s charm but also due to the stormy skies that greeted us. As we set off under dark clouds, it felt like the Green Journey might end right there. Battling wind and rain, we pushed through, buoyed by an unexpected roadside encounter with Rachel and Susie, who gifted us a jar of homemade stew that lifted our spirits. Despite the rough weather, we made it to Wyoming, where we sought refuge from relentless storms at a welcoming rest area. We’re behind schedule, but staying dry and embracing the journey are our new priorities.

Leaving Glenwood Springs, we knew we were in for a challenge as we faced some of the hardest cycling of our journey yet. The first day brought us to the top of Vail Pass at 10,000 feet, where we had to make a tough call—camp in freezing conditions or descend in the dark. We chose the latter, navigating the cold, eerie night with only our bike lights and the unsettling sight of yellow eyes in the darkness. The next day, we conquered Loveland Pass, reaching 12,000 feet, the highest point of our journey. But just when we thought the hard part was over, a steep gravel road nearly derailed us until a kind motorcyclist pointed us to a better route. Finally, we made it to Boulder, where we celebrated with friends, food, and much-needed rest, ready to take on the next chapter in the Midwest.

After a tough climb and a chilling descent, we finally made it through the Rockies and arrived in Boulder. The journey from Glenwood Springs to Boulder was our hardest yet, pushing us to our limits with steep elevations and cold nights. We faced a few setbacks, like a gravel road too steep for our bikes, but thanks to the help of a kind stranger, we found a better route. The highlight was reaching 12,000 feet at Loveland Pass, the highest point of our trip. Now, after a week of rest, we’re ready to tackle the next chapter in the Midwest.

After a challenging week, we finally made it to Colorado, crossing into our fourth state on our journey. The ride through Utah’s beautiful but tough landscapes was marred by homesickness and tough reflections, but we found comfort in the kindness of strangers. Entering Colorado brought new challenges, including a hair-raising stretch on I-70 and moments of joy, like a surprise French pastry feast in Glenwood Springs. With renewed energy and full bellies, we’re ready to tackle the Rockies.

Today was supposed to be a special birthday celebration for Polo, but it turned into a comedy of errors. We started with high hopes and big climbs, only to face unexpected single-track trails unsuitable for our wide solar bikes. After two failed attempts and several spills, we ended up on a lengthy detour around Strawberry Reservoir, feeling demoralized and low on battery. Despite the setbacks, Polo reflected on the journey, the people we’ve met, and the lessons learned.

We’re looking forward to a proper celebration in Denver, but for now, it’s rest and recharge.

We cross into Utah, leaving the loneliest road behind but not the challenges. After a morning coffee at the border inn, we met a diverse crowd intrigued by our solar bikes, including Dennis from Missouri and a group of Berkeley students. We then faced an 88-mile stretch of desert before arriving in Delta, where warm shower hosts Richard and Becky welcomed us with open arms and hearty meals. Feeling the strain of socializing and the road, we prepared for the mountains ahead and reflected on our unique but exhausting journey through the desert.

We continue our journey on The Loneliest Road in America, facing long stretches, cloudy weather, and unexpected wildlife encounters. After reaching Eureka, we had a near miss with a rattlesnake and finally arrived in Ely, Nevada, where we realized the loneliest road wasn’t finished yet. With limited solar power and the longest stretch ahead, we prepare for the challenging days to come, hoping for sun and human interaction to break the monotony.
