This week, we’re bringing back our conversation with Emmy-winning Writer, Producer, and Director Donick Cary. Well known in the television and film industry for his work on shows like The David Letterman Show, The Simpsons, Silicon Valley, and Parks and Recreation, Donick is also the writer and director of the Netflix hit, Have a Good Trip. This documentary mixes comedy with a thorough investigation of psychedelics, exploring the pros, cons, science, history, future, pop cultural impact, and cosmic possibilities of hallucinogens. It also includes some of the best psychedelic trip stories from celebrities like Sting, Sarah Silverman, Ben Stiller, A$AP Rocky, and the late greats Carrie Fisher and Anthony Bourdain.
Our host Lewis sat down with Donick to discuss his film in greater depth, including what drew his attention to psychedelics, his inspiration for developing a documentary around stories of psychedelic trips (and how he sold that idea to Netflix), his own introduction to psychedelics, and whether he’s turned to psychedelics to help deal with the anxiety caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Donick is one of the most talented writers in Hollywood, and it was a real treat to have him join us to discuss his journey. So don’t sit back, lean forward, and enjoy!
About Filmmaker and Writer Donick Cary: Emmy-winning Writer, Producer, and Director Donick Cary got his start writing for Late Night with David Letterman. He continued writing for Dave at The Academy Awards (but not the Oprah-Uma joke) and served as both Head Writer and “The Guy in the Bear Suit” on Late Show with David Letterman. After five years in late night, Cary moved to The Simpsons, where he served as a Co-Executive Producer for seasons seven through eleven, winning an Emmy and penning many memorable episodes including “D’oh-in in The Wind,” “In Marge We Trust” (Mr. Sparkle), and “Hell Toupee” (Homer gets the hair transplants of a killer).

Paul walked us through his thoughts, which can also be found in his recent op-ed in the Orange County Register, as well as what he thinks will move the needle through the DEA open comment period.
Kris and Paul also dive into the debate of incrementalism vs full reform for cannabis as well as why it’s critical to ensure advocacy organizations like NORML stay funded and operational, even as the U.S. becomes more accepting of cannabis.

Welcome to the Green Rush, a KCSA Strategic Communications Production, a weekly conversation at the intersection of cannabis, psychedelics, the capital markets, and culture.
This week’s episode is a crossover roundtable event with our friends at the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) covering the DEA’s proposed rescheduling of cannabis from Schedule I to a Schedule III drug. Hosted by our very own Anne Donohoe, the Q&A discussion also features Betty Aldworth, Director of Communications & Post-Prohibition Strategy at MAPS, Karen O’Keefe, Director of State Policies at Marijuana Policy Project (MPP) and Paul Armentano, Deputy Director at NORML.
With the unprecedented federal drug policy change on the near horizon, MAPS assembled leaders with more than 50 years of combined experience in the cannabis policy reform movement to talk about what these changes are, why they matter, what myths need debunking, and what still needs to be done. Some of the topics covered in this conversation include the impact rescheduling will have on research and development of cannabis-based medicines, criminal law and systems-impacted people, cannabis banking and interstate commerce and veteran affairs.
If you are interested in learning more about how MAPS, MPP or NORML have played pivotal roles in implementing drug policy reform over the decades, be sure to follow them all on their socials linked in our show notes and visit their websites to follow their advocacy work.
So, sit back and enjoy this crossover Q&A discussion on the future of cannabis drug policy.

Welcome to the Green Rush, a KCSA Strategic Communications Production, a weekly conversation at the intersection of cannabis, psychedelics, the capital markets, and culture.
This week Lewis Goldberg and Kris Krane sit down with long-time friend of the podcast Adam Smith, Founder and President of the Alliance for Sensible Markets, to talk about the DEA’s historic decision to reclassify cannabis from a Schedule I to Schedule III drug. As a long-time advocate working behind the scenes for decades to reverse the US’s draconian cannabis laws, Adam is cautiously optimistic about this development, noting that one of the most exciting changes will be the increase in research opportunities of cannabis for medical use.
Adam and our hosts also discuss the potential impacts this development will have on the industry and markets, the elimination of the 280E tax, and the potential global rescheduling of cannabis under the UN Single Convention on Narcotics. As the industry awaits what comes next, the team identifies M&A opportunities and clarity on interstate commerce as key areas of interest to watch over the coming months.
