On Greenwich Life As It Is -And Was, Erwin Edwards took his readers in 1920 to 'Cauggnawaug Road' -we know this well-known winding road as Cognewaugh Road today.

Welcome to the Election Day, 7th of November 2023 show.

We'll take you back to Armistice Day a century ago, when seven-hundred people attended the Legion's Ball at the State Armory on Mason Street.

It was a fun-filled Election Day evening for the people of Byram and Port Chester in 1908. They enjoyed the pleasure of witnessing Alex Scott -who lost an Election Day bet- wheeled Joseph Marshall in a wheelbarrow.
On Greenwich in the Gilded Age, Erwin Edwards took his readers back to circa 1900. With trains arriving from New York City with wealthy businessmen returning to their Greenwich homes, the train station was a nightly parade of elegant horses and carriages.

In 1908, many voters were feeling disenfranchised. Why? With nearly 3000 voters in town -and only one polling station available- there were calls for additional polling stations, especially by the residents of Old Greenwich (then called Sound Beach).

In 1906, the Greenwich Police Department was founded. We're pleased to take our listeners back in time on Crimes and Misdemeanors, a segment of the show chronicling crime and law enforcement.

On today's show, listeners will hear about three boy burglars who caused quite a stir in the Pemberwick section of Greenwich.

There’s lots to see, to do, and to learn about the history of the Town of Greenwich.

Ezekiel Lemondale (also known as Judge Frederick A. Hubbard) and his friend "Mr. Parker" went for a drive South of the Post Road (East Putnam Avenue), describing "a six-mile ride over a shady, rustic and historic road, and tells who lives along the way."

We occasionally hear the term "road rage" used, thinking that such incidents are of recent nature. You'll hear about a "motoring incident" in 1911.

That same year, a unique steam-powered car arrived in Greenwich that furnished power -and roasted peanuts.

This podcast is made possible by Alexander Affiliates, Eastern Neurologic Services, Kevin M. J. O'Connor of Jeffrey Matthews Wealth Management, and listeners like you everywhere on the Atlantic Learning Consortium Network!

Welcome to the Halloween, 31st of October 2023 show.

On Saturday, March 17, 1894, the people of Greenwich learned of a mysterious cemetery vault from the pen of Ezekiel Lemonade, also known as Judge Frederick A. Hubbard.

It was located in the Field Point area near the railroad tracks:

"One night, several years after Captain Bush had laid out his cemetery and two of his children had been interred there, he saw a light moving in a mysterious way through the grounds. The next night he looked for it, again but saw nothing, as the graves were undisturbed, the fact soon escaped from his mind."

The railroad was in the process of expanding the number of tracks, necessitating the removal of the graves. The vault and surrounding graves were scheduled to be transferred to Putnam Cemetery off Parsonage Road in the coming summer.

The story gets more interesting -and you'll hear how.

Over a century ago, the Holley Inn was the setting of a Halloween party featuring members of its American Impressionist art colony. We'll share details.

We've featured a sampling of how Halloween was celebrated in private homes and public places from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

In 1906, the Greenwich Police Department was founded. We're pleased to take our listeners back in time on Crimes and Misdemeanors, a segment of the show chronicling crime and law enforcement. On today's show, listeners will hear about Halloween night in 1946 -it was a busy and colorful one with its share of mischief and mayhem.

There’s lots to see, to do, and to learn about the history of the Town of Greenwich.

Welcome to the 26th of September 2023 show.

On Greenwich in the Gilded Age, our visit will take us to Round Island in Belle Haven, on the shore of Long Island Sound. This "Great Estate" was designed originally by Henry C. Pelton for John D. Chapman in 1908. The architect for renovations dated 1924-1934 were by E. Spencer Guidal.

Our journey is made possible on today's show by The Great Estates, Greenwich, Connecticut 1880-1930 by the Junior League of Greenwich.

Copies may be borrowed through Greenwich Library. Superbly illustrated with a wealth of detailed history, I strongly recommend it.

On Greenwich Life: As It Is -And Was, Lucien Edwards penned a piece for the Greenwich News & Graphic on Greenwich's earliest train commuters.

In 1906, the Greenwich Police Department was founded. We're pleased to take our listeners back in time on Crimes and Misdemeanors, a segment of the show chronicling crime and law enforcement.

The people of Greenwich learned of predictions that "human beings will be equipped with wings," and of Walter Lewisohn, a wealthy businessman who checked himself into Blythewood Sanitarium -where First Baptist Church of Greenwich on Stanwich Road is now located. Why?

There’s lots to see, to do, and to learn about the history of the Town of Greenwich.

Welcome to the 19th of September 2023 show.

On Greenwich in the Gilded Age, our visit will take us to Grahampton in Clapboard Ridge. It was constructed in 1917 for Henry W. Croft, and designed by Johnson and Abbot of Pittsburgh. The landscape architect was John Greenleaf. "Finished in 1917, it was built of brick with a slate-and-tile roof; it had eight bedrooms, eleven fireplaces and six chimneys."

Our journey is made possible on today's show by The Great Estates, Greenwich, Connecticut 1880-1930 by the Junior League of Greenwich.

It was during this period that Greenwich transformed from a rural community of farmers to a community known for its opulent mansions and gardens, when the name "Greenwich" became synonymous with the word "millionaire" before the Great Depression.

It may be available for purchase at the Greenwich Historical Society's Museum Store, or copies may be borrowed through Greenwich Library. Superbly illustrated with a wealth of detailed history, I strongly recommend it.

On Greenwich Life: As It Is -And Was, Erwin Edwards offered his readers his thoughts in 1921 on the cost of living then and what it was ten years before.

In 1906, the Greenwich Police Department was founded. We're pleased to take our listeners back in time on Crimes and Misdemeanors, a segment of the show chronicling crime and law enforcement.

In other historical happenings, a night school was established in Glenville in 1911. In the year 1893, prize fighting reared its head in town -to mixed reviews.

You'll hear a poem published, 'Summer's Farewell.' Constitution Week was marked in 1928, as well as news of a new, experimental medium called television. With the electoral season underway in 1911, there were predictions of a "tame election" in 1911. The First Baptist Church of Greenwich held a "Japanese bazaar" in September, 1908.

In 1928, Mrs. Betty Randolph, formerly of the Ziegfield Follies of New York, failed to show up for a wedding ceremony in Greenwich with her fiancee, the Rev. Benjamin J. Chudacek of Philadelphia. Why? You'll hear the details.

Greenwich has been the residence of important business executives for generations. One of them, Walter C. Teagle of Byram Shore -who was the president of Jersey Standard Oil, commented in 1911 about the importation of oil from Mexico.

There’s lots to see, to do, and to learn about the history of the Town of Greenwich.

Welcome to the 5th of September 2023 show. I hope you enjoyed a relaxing Labor Day weekend. I'm still out here in Honolulu, Hawaii --where I just finished teaching an international cohort university women students from Japan.

On Greenwich in the Gilded Age, our visit will take us to Mitchell Cottage. Its principal owner was H.H. Mitchell. The cottage was designed by Frank W. Beall and subsequently built in 1892 at the intersection of Field Point Drive and Glenwood Drive. The house was demolished in 1920, with the land incorporated into the Prescott Estate.

Our journey is made possible on today's show by Victorian Summer: The Historic Houses of Belle Haven Park, Greenwich, Connecticut by Matt Bernard.

It is available for purchase at the Greenwich Historical Society's Museum Store, or copies may be borrowed through the Greenwich Library. It is richly illustrated, revealing a wealth of detailed history. I strongly recommend it.

On Greenwich Life: As It Is -And Was, Lucien B. Edwards took his readers back in time and history to when Greenwich was primarily a farming community.

"Touring" by automobile was all the rage in 1910. "It is not a wonder that people are enthusiastic over touring in an automobile, said Mr. E.J. Edwards, Jr., who has just returned from a three weeks' trip through portions of New England.

We continue to observe the 125th anniversary of the founding of the Greenwich Police Department on Crimes and Misdemeanors.

President Warren G. Harding was the 29th President of the United States. He died of a heart attack August 2, 1923. A unity memorial service was held in his honor and memory at the Second Congregational Church of Greenwich.

In other historical news, in 1894 -the first year Labor Day was observed- the Indian Harbor Yacht Club held a regatta in a "nor-easter." All was not calm nor serene by any measure.

An airship -the USS Shenandoah- paid a visit to New York City. For miles around, people gathered to see the enormous ship approach from New Jersey. Could you see it from Greenwich's coastline?

Are you aware that at one time "automobilists" who wanted to drive their cars across state lines were required to attain a permit? Fortunately, Connecticut's attorney-general changed his mind about such measures.

There’s lots to see, to do, and to learn about the history of the Town of Greenwich.
