Luna pulls into a rest stop outside Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, just past three in the morning. The diner is empty except for a waitress who's been working the same shift for forty years and a man in a booth by the window who never orders anything. He's there every night, she says, always the same booth, always watching the highway. Luna sits down across from him. He tells her a story about a bus driver who found something on the road that changed everything. When Luna goes back to her bus, the man is gone, and the waitress says he's been dead for ten years. The coffee is cold. The highway is dark. And Luna has a passenger she didn't pick up.
