  • The Dutch Hippies: From a School Bus to a Mansion | The Grind and The Glory

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!

Musicians Pepe and Ava — better known as The Dutch Hippies — sit down with Joe Rottbart to tell the story behind their name, their marriage, and their music.

Ava was signed to Sony at 15 and walked away rather than be molded into the next Britney Spears. When producers took Pepe's guitar tracks without asking, she left a major label deal at 16 to build a band with him instead. From Amsterdam to New York, Pepe engineered Jay-Z's American Gangster Tour auditions and Lady Gaga's early showcases at Smash Studios, while the two of them chased a record deal they say they manifested years before it happened.

Then came Hurricane Sandy, a flooded gallery, a baby on the way, and a decision to leave New York for Miami. They converted a school bus into a home, lived in it for eight years while raising their kids, and built the Dutch Hippies brand from scratch. Today they're on nearly three acres of their own. That's the grind and the glory.
