Immigration is a hot button issue. Lately it has been quite popular to identify Jesus as a refugee with reference to Mary and Joseph fleeing with him to Egypt to escape Herod's infanticide. Is this really the text from which to derive a political policy about immigration and refugees? Is Mary, Joseph and Jesus with saddlebags full of gold, frankincense and myrrh really akin to sub-Saharan migrants on rubber dinghies crossing the English Channel with only the clothes on their backs? Or Hispanic migrants being muled through the North American desert?
