Barry Enderwick is best known for his series Sandwiches of History where every day at lunch time he makes a sandwich and reviews it. He makes sandwiches from throughout history - from old 19th century recipe books to user submitted sandwiches - then tries to improve them and lets us know whether they’re worth making. It’s a simple concept that is highly addictive. And the concept has grown beyond his daily social media videos to a live tour and his own cookbook.

Barry and I talk about his time as a college radio DJ, the person who introduced him to his favorite band and whether or not he listens to music while he makes sandwiches.

You might know him as That Guy from The People Under the Stairs, That Guy from Twister, or That Guy from the original Got Milk commercial. In addition to his acting credits in everything from Batman Returns to Lost. Recently he’s also started directing with the indie horror movie Crust.

But Sean is also a huge music fan. We talk about growing up in DC and loving funk, moving to LA to become an actor and getting into new wave, and what rock star he’d love to play in a movie.

The viral videos are of him doing crowd work while using auto-tune on his mic, which has led to many calling him the auto tune comic. But he’s a lot more than that. He has jokes, he plays guitar, he writes songs, he’s a trained actor, he’s multilingual, and his shows sell out all over the world.

We talk about the music his parents taught him when he was young, how he started finding success in comedy after over a decade of doing stand up, and how his musical comedy is able to uniquely appeal across cultures and languages.

Today Patrick sits down with comedian Nick White to build the playlist of his life.

Nick White was studying for a master’s degree in architecture in his native Australia when he had the realization that he wanted to do comedy. He had started doing stand up and had done well in some stand up competitions, but he had already invested a lot of time and money into studying architecture. So he finished his masters and then went to work in the architecture world. But comedy kept calling to him.

In addition to performing stand up live he also started making character based videos on Instagram and TikTok. Eventually he got the courage to follow his heart and he quit his job to do comedy full time. Now he has hundreds of thousands of followers on social media and sold out comedy shows from Sydney to London. He is also a huge music fan, so we talked about his musical obsessions, the song that reminds him of his first break up, and the song he doesn’t like that much so he listened to while having panic attacks.

The Guest List is back with something special for our 25th episode - instead of one guest we’ve got a whole band. The LA band Automatic releases their third album this week - Is It Now? (out Sep 26). It’s a delightful blast of post-punk groove with dark synths, dancey bass lines, and meaningful lyrics. It’s one of my favorite albums of the year so I thought it would be fun to find out what tracks make the band tick.

Today Patrick sits down with actor Drew Talbert to build the playlist of his life.

After college Drew Talbert moved from Nashville, Tennessee to LA to make it in the movies. Like so many other aspiring writers and actors he worked as a server to pay the bills while he pursued his dreams. He eventually joined the legendary Groundlings theater company and was a teacher there for years. But he wasn’t finding the kind of success he had hoped for when he moved.

That was until COVID hit and Drew found himself stuck at home, not able to perform anywhere. So he took his Groundlings training and his years of server experience and started making videos on TikTok about a fictional restaurant called Bistro Huddy. (He writes the sketches with his wife Andrea Kelley and he plays all the parts himself). Soon his videos blew up and Drew now has nearly 10 million followers on social media with every new Bistro Huddy episode getting millions of views.

Drew and I talk about growing up in Nashville while not liking country music, what music sounds like after you get sober, and the amazing road trip music draft he has with his friends.

Today Patrick sits down with musician and author Doug Robertson to build the playlist of his life.

Doug spent a lot of his life as an elementary school teacher and turned that experience into several acclaimed books, including He’s The Weird Teacher and A Classroom of One. But in his 30s he had a revelation that he was constantly asking his students to challenge themselves and to do things they’d never done before, but he couldn’t remember the last time he had challenged himself. So he decided to pick up an instrument and start learning to play. Now he’s got his own heavy metal band Red Hoof and they’re releasing their debut album this month.

Doug and I talk about getting into heavy metal for the first time, the time he decided to drop everything and move to Hawaii, and the amazing story of how he went from thinking he wasn’t musically inclined to mastering prog songs.

Gabi didn’t expect to make a career out of posting about vintage fashion online. But like a lot of creative people when COVID hit- she was an actress who was in college studying theater- she turned to social media as an outlet for performing. She had inherited a large clothing collection from her grandmother and started making videos about the history of the pieces. Her Tiktok channel started blowing up and soon she had grown to over a million followers across social media. She has also just released a book How to Dress Vintage which is out today.

We talk about how she got started making videos, the connection between music and fashion, and what music she listens to while she gets dressed.
