This week: the online shopping cart that never closes.

Let me describe your relationship with online shopping.

It starts with one thing you actually need.A phone case. A cable. A specific type of kitchen itemthat you have managed without for three years but suddenly cannot live without.

You open the app to find it.But the app is designed by people who are very, very good at their jobs.So while you are looking for the phone case,you see a jacket that is on sale.And a pair of shoes that are forty percent off — but only for the next six hours.And a home item that has four point eight stars and twelve thousand reviewsfrom people who all say it changed their life.

You add them all to the cart.

Not to buy. Just to think about it.The cart is just for thinking about things.

Except the cart is not just for thinking.

The cart is a psychological holding room where items waituntil your resistance is low enough for them to escape into your home.

And your resistance is always low at eleven pm.When you are tired. When you are scrolling. When the notification says:"Items in your cart are selling fast."

That notification is not information. It is a trigger.And it works every time.

Here are the numbers that Gulf professionals do not calculate.

The average Gulf professional with an active shopping appmakes between four and eight unplanned purchases per month.Average unplanned purchase value: twenty-five rials.

I am telling you that the gym membership is the most expensive form of good intention.

Because you are not paying for exercise.You are paying for the feeling of being someone who exercises.That feeling costs fifty rials a month.The actual exercise costs nothing.

Here is what the financially smart Gulf professional does instead.

Before signing any membership, commit to thirty days of exercise with no gym.Walk. Run outside. Use the building stairs. Do something free.
