Chatting about some research! And, if you watch this on YouTube, you can see pictures from my trip with my sister to South Korea's Poo Museum! Fitting stuff.

How much do you hate failing? Most of us do – there is an intense fear associated with the feelings we have after failing.
But, how much do you find you are held back by that? Do you wish you could get past that? Our minds are so powerful – but too often, we let them hold us back, chain us to our current situation, keep us from striving, from trying, from growing and moving forward.
Failure is feedback. Don’t be afraid to fail – because it means you’re learning, you’re doing, you’re growing.
Todays’ episode is with Tom Burns, sharing his journey and how he faced and overcame various fears time and time again. How he had to dig down, and what inspired him to push on and become a Spartan Coach, a trainer, and an athlete. And, in his words, why he “loves to fail” now.

TALKING ABOUT THERAPEUTIC USE OF DIETS!
Specifically, what you should be aware of if you’re told to follow a true keto diet (vs “low carb”), a low FODMAP diet, or the AIP (Autoimmune Protocol) diet.
So listen in, and share with others!
NOTE: There is a moment in talking about the AIP diet where Andee lists items that are not allowed on the AIP diet, and she lists NSAIDS and states prescription meds (which can be stronger level NSAIDS, such as Naproxen). This was brought to my attention that someone may interpret that as someone thinking they should quit their medications if they want to do a true AIP diet. PLEASE NOTE, THAT IS NOT WHAT WE ARE SAYING! Andee is sharing the given protocol, not our condoning of quitting meds. Per Dr. Sarah Ballantyne’s outline, yes, NSAIDS (such as aspirin or ibuprofen) are listed under “to be removed” — BUT! This again drive home the need to PERSONALIZE and INDIVIDUALIZE! If your doctor told you to take a medicine, do NOT quit taking without their guidance. Dr. Ballantyne’s outline is a good cookie-cutter starting point, but you need to adapt for you, with guidance from your doctor or other health care professional well versed in AIP.

Setting goals can be incredibly powerful, but also can be trickier than you may realize at times. In this Gut Check episode, Ashley Tryban breaks down some tools to look at and consider. Not only is she a powerhouse of goal setting for herself, but her passion is coaching others by helping them tap into their own inner motivation to set goals and crush them! She was the Health & Wellness specialist for Verizon for over 10 years, and recently took on the role of Manager of Coaching Operations with AliveCor Inc. She shares a passion for disrupting the healthcare model by focusing on diet, lifestyle, sustainability, and gratitude.
So we dive into why setting goals can help, some tips on how to do that, and common mistakes people make that can derail you fairly quickly.
It starts with MINDSET! Finding your deep WHY and that ROOT CAUSE of why you want to hit a goal, and what it really means to you on a much deeper level. Ask “why is that important” five times for a goal, to start. And then have a way to stay accountable! To yourself, to friends, to an app, to a coach – whatever it takes!
Ashley also mentions a few resources that you can check out; and she and I had a little post-podcast chat where she shows her journal, and I added on a little more about goal setting, and discussing my own morning routine a bit. (Note, there are some visuals in this video, so swing over to https://dublindietitian.com/2020/12/08/gce4-depression/ to see the visuals or watch the video).
Depression is a web of cause and effect, internal and external factors.
In this Gut Check Episode 4, Andee and I hit an overview of things we can do from various perspectives: mindset and self talk, nutrients and foods, movement and posture, breathing, sleep, singing and more.
We talk about why Gratitude lists can backfire, and why you don’t have to just ACCEPT your health or energy.
My path through depression and suicidal thoughts lasted for years, and it was a FIGHT. But I made it through, and am constantly striving to live my best life, intentionally, every day, using all the tools available to set my body up for things to work right, chemically and hormonally.
IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE.

CAN YOU RELATE?
You go to the doctor every year, and you’re told “all your lab work is normal.”
Then all of a sudden, after 5, 10, 20 years of being “normal,” you are diagnosed with a severe disease like diabetes or IBS or arthritis…But we know these conditions don’t just happen over night.
Or you SWEAR it must be your thyroid because you Just. Can’t. Lose. Weight.
And you’re tired and cold all the time.
You just don’t feel like YOU, but your doctor insists everything is “normal.”
SO WHAT IS UP WITH YOUR LABS??
We review some of the history of how lab ranges were initially set and how they continue to evolve today.
We discuss groupings of labs and markers, such as Thyroid health being determined by more than JUST a TSH or T4 lab…
What is the “gag clause” keeping you from knowing your options, and how are Medical, Pharmaceutical, and Insurance companies all tied together?
Andee and I chat about just that!
Want to get a lab interpretation from a FUNCTIONAL MEDICAL NUTRITION THERPAY lens looking at that ROOT CAUSE, instead of a “falling off the cliff” diagnosis? Email me [email protected] to set up a Lab Interpretation session.

Ever felt like a number being pushed through the assembly line at your doctors office? There are a lot of unfortunate forces at work that limit many conventional practitioners from having time to go deeper with their patients. In this episode, Kate introduces one of her early clients, Andee, and they explore the different paths Andee went through and the limits she hit with help from conventional methods. Once she was able to start working with functional medicine to look at root cause, things finally began to click! Listen in for more about the limitations of our health care systems, and some ways you can empower yourself to find answers.
