In which the venerable Lord Chickney, with his old soldier’s simplicity and quirks, endeavours to unravel a tangled misunderstanding involving youthful misadventures, an obstinate Lord Moggeridge, and a mysterious witness, while the perturbed Captain Douglas flees from the chaotic entanglement of matters both social and sentimental. The story settles into a contemplative close as the boy Bealby returns home, wiser and more subdued, confronted by the sober realities of the world he has so unwittingly disturbed.
